Hi, y'all! It might be a little early yet to make plans, but I'm up for getting together once or twice a week for write-ins. Last year we met at the Downbeat Cafe near Sunset and Alvarado (1202 N. Alvarado St., Los Angeles, CA), and it worked pretty well for our group which numbered anywhere from one to about 12. In previous years, we've also met at The Coffee Table on Rowena near Hyperion in Silverlake. Both have outlets for laptops, good coffee, tasty food for not too outrageous prices, and welcome writers and writing groups. It would be great to get together with fellow WriMos on a regular basis.

I've done Nano before but my first year back in LA since starting was kind of bust since I got a new job and was fighting a negligent landlord the whole month. Now I'm in Los Feliz and ready to Nano my heart out so I'm happy to show up to write ins and I may even scope out places beforehand!

hello all,

this will be my second attempt; my first ('07) was undone by a time-sucking website which a friend sent me in the middle of the month.

please keep me updated of write-ins, especially ones at Downbeat Cafe as i live walking distance.

Hey there, this is my first NaNoWriMo. I met a guy from Hawaii at a social during Folsom Street Fair late last September and he told me about this writing event. I'm excited to participate and look forward to the creative process.

I would enjoy getting together once a week and checking in with y'all. Weeknights are best for me and I'm in the East Hollywood / Thaitown Los Feliz Adjacent area near Kaiser.

Downbeat works for me; close enough and me with no car. New to this & signed up on the spur of the moment yesterday, so probably going to need a LOT of built-in guilt-generateors to keep me going to the end.

Or maybe not. Here's hoping it will all just flow & fill up my screen effortlessly through the month!

Weekend mornings (not too early) are best for me, but I may be able to swing a midweek evening once a week. Thing is, I do my best writing away from the house because it's too easy for me to get caught in the internet tractor beam. When I'm out writing with my little AlphaSmart, there's no temptation to go online "just for a minute to see if I have any messages" since I can't get on the internet with it.

Anyway, I'll be at the Downbeat on Sunday11/1 at 11 a.m. for a couple of hours at least. If anyone can join me, that'd be great! If anyone wants to do a write-in at another place/another day/another time, please don't be shy. Post it here so we can go if it works for us!

Hope to see some of you at the Kick-Off today. I'm leaving now. I'll be the lady with the bird on her shoulder (we have somewhere to go before or after stopping in at the kick-off. :)

If I could also suggest Stories bookstore & cafe on Sunset, just a couple of blocks past Alverado on the right, with a parking lot out back.

CAFE HOURS
open at 8:30am Mon - Fri
(please enter through the back alley)

STORE HOURS
Mon - Thur 10:30am - 9pm
Fri & Sat 10:30am - 10pm
Sunday 11am - 7pm

a few individual tables in front, couple of long tables & benches in the cafe part, and a patio out back with more individual tables. Looks very friendly for a NaNo Write-In.

First year doing this, and looking forward to meeting some peeps.

I'm over here near Larchmont, so I figure I'll hit up some of the Silverlake write ins. I'm down for any of the locations previously mentioned. Nights work best for me.

I live in K-Town but frequent the DT/Silverlake/Echo Park area (especially Downbeat and Stories). Excellent suggestions, BTW. Am down to meet weekend mornings/weekday nights, maybe once or week or so.

Missed the L.A. kickoff at The Grove this weekend but look forward to meeting some of you in the future :)

Oh, I've been wanting to get over to Stories (I follow them on Twitter, if you can believe it!). It sounds great for either weekend mornings or weekday evenings.

The Downbeat Cafe is at 1202 N. Alvarado, Echo Park, and is open Mon. to Fri. 7 a.m.-10 p.m. and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on Sat. & Sun. Wednesday night is live jazz night, so that wouldn't work for me. Music distracts me from writing. Here's some other info on it: Tables inside and a few in front on the sidewalk; street parking; no wifi (at least there wasn't last year); lots of outlets; groups welcome.

I got to The Farmers Market late yesterday (around 5 p.m.) and walked around looking but couldn't find any WriMos so just grabbed something to go and went home. Sorry to have missed it ~ I've gone to the KO party two years running and really enjoyed them.

You're right Storeetllr. Downbeat doesn't have WiFi but have a plentiful supply of outlets (which is great for my plug-dependent laptop). Downbeat parking is best on Sundays (Sunset street parking is free) but they close at 5. I believe Stories asks for a small fee to use their WiFi now but they have great patio space and it's easily one of my favorite places in Echo Park.

Hey! I just realized that NaNo starts this Sunday! *headsmack* I thought November 1 was on Monday, for some reason. Anyway, I plan to go somewhere to write on Sunday from 11 a.m. or so to around 2 p.m. Parking at The Downbeat is good on Sundays, as srasaviola pointed out, and I know where it is :) so I think I'll go there at least the first time. Hope some of you will be able to join me. I'll have a NaNo coffee mug and will try to remember to bring a sign. Then, if anyone does show up, we can maybe talk about where to meet next.

Hi everybody,

This is my first go at NaNo also. I'd be up to meet at Stories or Downbeat, I'm nearby and sounds like a great way to do some mutually supportive writing!

Hey, everyone! It's great to have you all participating this year, and I hope to see you all as we travel to the write-ins around LA. :)

Speaking of which, I've seen a few ideas floating in this thread about some possibly regular write-ins in your area? If you have a semi-concrete idea when and where those would normally happen, please post it in the Grand Write-In Thread so I can get it on the calendar!

Thanks and have an awesome, awesome week....NaNo is little over a day away now !

I'll try to stop by Downbeat this Sunday then to say Hi, but I'm thinking I'm thinking about Monday already, the first day with a whole work day before I can think about The Novel-

I'm going to say I'll be at Stories Monday evening, between 6-6:30pm until they close at 8pm to help me stay on track or figure out how to shoehorn this into my daily grind (much of which, alas, already spoken for with non-writing activities). I think I might even try to keep that up Tues. Wed. and Thurs. too that first week, see how it goes as a routine.

My thinking is if I go directly there after work, before going home, I won't get distracted by everything that pulls you once you walk in your front door. Worst case scenario, it'll be practice in switching mental gears effectively.

Everybody READY? It's less than 3 hours until midnight! Some call it The Witching Hour. I call it NANOWRIMO TIME!

I'm so excited (nervous?) I'm shaking inside and can't eat, which is something that rarely ever happens to me (as you'll see if you come to any of the write-ins I hope to be at). lol

Okay, so 11-1 (or whenever, really) at The Downbeat tomorrow. CanNOT wait!

OMG, I forgot to charge up my AlphaSmart! Argh. Okay, gotta go do that. Hope to see everyone there tomorrow.

(I'll post tomorrow's write-in on the main calendar, and then, if tomorrow we decide to meet at Stories going forward, will change the calendar.)

(Can you tell I'm a little jittery? Happens every year during NaNo. A week before, I start getting twitchy. By the start, I'm unable to sit still. By Nov. 30, total, numbed exhaustion. Next day, I start counting the months until next year's NaNo.)

Hey All,

I'm Vicki and I'm stoked to be committing myself to Nanowrimo this year. I've had a few unsuccessful attempts but this year is the year. I've already talked about it so much I've got a reputation to maintain. I live in Atwater and I'd love to meet some other writers and make it to a write-in. I work most days from 10-6:30. I'll definitely try to pop by the downbeat at some point this week and I'll try to make it to Stories Monday night after work. Look forward to meeting some of you and I can't wait to get these characters out of my head. They're starting to drive me a little crazy.

Cheers!

I have the day off today (hooray!) so I'm going to head off to Stories at maybe 10:30/11 to go write. I know wrenboys had expressed interest in going later and I might even still be there then if I get on a roll. I'm excited to go check it out and would love to have company if anyone cares to join me. I'll wear an old nano shirt so that I'm spotable.

I live in Koreatown. I might stop by Stories another day but today I plan to be at the Coffee Bean on Wilshire/Vermont today. (Black shirt, pink writing, "If you don't check 'em, I will."

Another good spot is downtown's Lot 44. FANTASTIC coffee and a nice open atrium.

Hi, all-

I'm off work early today, writing from home, but would be up for meeting another day. I'm in Los Feliz, but anywhere in the general area between Hollywood and downtown works.

I only got 1,200 words done yesterday, so need to catch up a bit.

This is my second year, and I'm cheating a bit this time - I have the beginning of a novel already (the first 25K words) and it needs another 50K, so I'm doing that rather than starting fresh. It seemed to make more sense to get to the end of a project rather than keep starting things that may never get finished. Plus, I did the real start-from-scratch thing and finished a couple years ago, so I don't feel too bad.

Bah... 2nd day and I'm already behind... Story of my life. No pun intended. I get done with work around 6:30... Anybody going to write anywhere around echo park, silverlake or los feliz? I want to meet my fellow novelists.
