Any interest in meeting either at 8 am or around lunch time at the Whole Foods, River Street location for some quick writing (30-60 mins)?

Jude,

I could make some lunch times at Whole Foods, River Street, maybe even a few 8ams.

Hey Gerald :)

Glad to know there's at least two of us in the area. I'm sure we'll hear from a few more as November draws nigh.

Is this planned for a specific day of the week? I'm at MIT, so I'm probably close enough to make it, schedule allowing.

Hi Bookaholic:

No specific day/s chosen, we can talk about what works for everyone as November nears. It's pretty informal, so we'll just figure it out as we go along.

Me and my fiance are in the process of moving into Cambridge (M-F we're living out of a hotel, at least until we find an apartment).. both of us are doing NaNo this year. We're both up to attending write-ins!

By the way, I'll hopefully be holding some write-ins at MIT, which other Cambridge people are welcome to attend.

Harvard is close I'd do Harvard. Peet's Coffee is too busy I used to work there and there's little laptop plug in's. Plenty of on campus locations and people would assume we're students and leave us alone. The Kennedy School by iHop has a giant ampitheather inside they use for political debates and has comfy sofa like chairs. The Science bldg in Harvard Yard where the summer farmer's market is has a cafeteria. Atomic Bean Cafe is usually empty so that'd be a great place too.

I no longer live in Cambridge but I did for ten years or so. Anyway, I would like to do write-ins there, but do you have to be part of the Harvard community to get into the buildings you are mentioning? I know someone who teaches at the Kennedy center who could probably get us permissions if any are needed.

If I do MIT write-ins, they will be at the Science Fiction Society library. You need a keyholder (me) to open the library, but MITSFS has plenty of non-student members who have no trouble getting into the building.

I'd be up for Harvard Square as well. Crema Cafe has great food and atmosphere, but it's been swamped every time I've been there. If we could find a time when it was fairly empty, they've got sort of an upper balcony area that would be easy to take over and not get in the way of the other customers. I wonder if there's a spot at the Coop we could use? Or maybe Harvard Book Store? Seems like they'd be supportive of something like NaNo.

Just thinking out loud.

How about Au Bon Pain, where we had a couple official ones last year?

Which one? There's one in Kendall Square and one near Central. I can make it to either, but the Kendall one in particular is a very short walk from my dorm.

Actually, we had events at both of those locations last year.

This year, we're having the Nov. 12th event at the Central Square location; it's a bit brighter and less crowded than the Harvard Au Bon Pain.

:-)

Cheers,
Travis

I agree, but the Harvard one could work for an unofficial write-in, considering we might not get the same size crowd : )

Out of curiosity: has any consideration been given to the always-sparsely-populated ABP by Games People Play? Windows all around, somewhat inconveniently located no matter what T stop you use, free wireless, irregular space, plenty of room. Plus you can pop in to GPP if you need to purchase some distracting German family board game (I strongly recommend Wasabi!).

Not that I'm advocating for a change of venue, I'd just love confirmation/denial of my suspicion that it's an ideal ABP location from the standpoint of maximum-to-likely occupancy ratio.

This thread is informal--if you think you have a good place to meet, suggest it!

My original suggestion is based solely on the fact that I work but do not live in Cambridge, so I need my writing hours to be close by, but people are throwing out other cool places to meet, so I think Cambridge wrimos will have a good selection of people and places for NaNo fun in Nov.

I'd be another person who'd be in for Harvard Square writing. Or Davis Square.

I will be hosting write-ins from 3-5 PM on the first three Saturdays in November at the MIT Science Fiction Society (MITSFS). The address is 84 Mass Ave, and you can find it on Google Maps here.

Directions: From the Central Square T station, go south on Mass Ave. The MIT campus begins at Vassar Street; a little further down Mass Ave, there is a crosswalk in front of a domed building with columns. On the opposite site of the street is a squarish building surrounded by bike racks, with a sign on the side facing the street that says Julius Adams Stratton Center. Inside, take the elevator to the fourth floor. MITSFS is in room W20-473. The floor is laid out in a figure 8 pattern, with the elevators in the middle and MITSFS at the back of one of the loops. The MITSFS web site, mitsfs.mit.edu, has links to a campus map and a floor plan. If you get lost, you can either ask anyone on campus how to get to the student center or call MITSFS at 617-258-5126.

Note: While the building is open to the public and many Science Fiction Society members are not MIT students, the library itself is only open when a keyholder is present. I'm the keyholder on duty from 3 to 5 on Saturdays, and barring last-minute cancellations, there will be another keyholder in the library for at least two hours before that. However, since no one is scheduled for hours after mine, I will probably have to kick everyone else out when I leave. Also, there are a number of chairs but not much table space, and while food is permitted, it should be kept away from the books.

Speaking of libraries...since no one's been inside it yet it's hard to know whether there's a good space for a write-in, but the new Cambridge Main Library opens up on the 8th. (FINALLY.) I bet we could even reserve one of the meeting rooms in the basement if we wanted to.

I'd love to hit the MIT ones. I'm in Central Square and can pretty much spit at the campus from my apartment.

The new library at 449 Broadway officially opens November 8! What better way to celebrate than to Write-In there sometime next month?
