Hi, Just wanted to start a thread for the students and grads of Holly Lisle's **How to Think Sideways** course.
Although we will spread out according to genre, location, age, or beverage preference, we can always come back here where everybody knows our names and we all speak fluent Sideways.

*Waves* heya everyone!
I brought some coffee, tea, and munchies. ;)
I'm only on my second month of HTTS, so I'm not sure if I'll have to take a break from it during NaNo or not - but I do know my idea of NaNo came from my HTTS lessons!
This will be my 4th NaNo, though I only managed to win my first year.

Hi... I'm new to both sideways and nanowrimo. I won't be far enough into HTTS for it to help with much with nano this year, but, hey, I have time on my hands and want to go from a "one day" novelist to a bone fide writer even if this years work is absolutely atrocious. :)

Found ya! Good to see the group here!
I am relatively new to the HtTS boards and a first time NaNoWrimo participant. I am jumping in here for the fun of it, and to keep me from procrastinating on my How to Think Sideways lessons. They are the most fun thing that I do in a day; therefore, I put them off as a reward for myself. The problem is that I rarely finish EVERYTHING else I think I need to do before getting my reward.
Maybe I should change my strategy to reward first then work. Hmmmm.....

Hai all!
Tis good to see that someone started this up again... thanks Texanne! It's also good to see folks new to HtTS found their way over here.
Has anyone else noticed that Nano seems to fall on the worst time of the year? November is always such a trying time for me... what with college, work, the holidays, and my unsightly addiction to MMORPGs. I've failed every year because by the time the middle of the month rolls around, I get overwhelmed and something has to go.
Anyone else feel this way? Anyone have any suggestions for actually getting the win this year?

Hi:
I just signed up for HTTS today. Am waiting for my first lesson. Looks like it may be a challenge to do both NaNo and HTTS but I'm gonna give it my best shot. Folks have done it before, so why can't I? Don't know what I'm writing for NaNo yet. Trying not to be nervous about that. Ideas will come, right?

Oooo, whatcha playing now? I just got Aion... Everquest spit my screenname out of it's random name generator in 1995. Since then I have played WoW and LOTRO. I am disciplining myself not to go into Aion until I have 2K words on my current project done and am up to date with my lessons. Sleep is way overrated.
Chants to self: It is not necessary to be end game top guild to enjoy a game....casual is good, casual is balanced....

Good ol' Everquest. I actually met my husband playing that game, and I still miss it from time to time.
I played the Aion beta, but I just couldn't get into it. It has that Asian MMO feel, and I never seem to like those very much. I've played both Final Fantasy XI and WoW on and off for ages, but I finally swore off MMO's once and for all about a month ago. Too time consuming, and I suspect they bear the large part of the blame for me never getting any writing done. ;)

I have a MMORPG addiction too, but it is LOTRO for me. My main is Serephinas on Landroval and my alts are Annabeth and Anyiel.
One of my kin posted a video of their character in Aion this morning. Looked kinda cool, but a little too manga for me :)

I swear, everyone I know is playing Aion...
I just quit FFXI back in August and started playing World of Warcraft. I'm... enjoying it. Too much. Waaaay to much.
Let me know how that chanting works for you :D I had to almost quit (gave away gold and a bunch of items) before I realized that I could play casually. My new hunter is working fabulously.

I'd love to play casually, but my hubby is hardcore, and so I always wind up getting sucked into it WAY deeper than I ever meant to be. Which sucks, because I like MMOs, but my writing is more important to me. I'll just have to content myself with watching him raid from time to time
WoW is a lot of fun, but I've been playing it for...oh god, about five years now. No wonder I'm sick of it. XD FFXI was, I think, my favorite MMO, (not counting EQ. There's nothing quite like your first) but it took time-sink to a whole new level. I need to find an MMO designed for casual players. Wonder if one exists?

Ya find it, ya let me know, kolo? I wish such a thing were possible... we'd need to immediately ban anyone that a) didn't have a full time job or go to college full time, b) anyone under the age of 18, and c) any insomniacs. Then maybe the casual players wouldn't feel like we were drowning quickly in a sea of being an adult.

Hehe, yeah. Even if there was a game aimed straight at us casuals, it would still probably be overrun with hardcores. XD
@paganwriter: That is freaking *awesome*. I really wanted to go in to game development, but eventually had to concede that neither my artistic or mathematical skills were up to par. So I'm doing forensics instead, which is still probably going to wind up on the math-heavy side, but I'm hoping my aptitude for the less math-intensive elements of science balances it out. XD

M lotro account is lifetime, but I am NOT logging in, nope, no way... Bad enough I have Aion now. ;) My husband actually prefers to play more casually than I do. My older kids play as well. We have one group of characters that the 4 of us play together. I am thinking that I will let one of my youngers play mine when I am gettign pressure to play before getting my word count done for the day over the weekend. I created a character to play out of group, but haven;t played it yet. I think my best strategy is going to be not having a character I can go all competitive with and sharing my group character with my younger children. Otherwise, I will never get the writing done I want to. MMORPG's have a way of taking over one;s life. The only thing worse is browser games like tribal wars where you exist in the world and can be killed even when you are not actively online.
Back to the topic at hand... I still haven;t hit my word count for today, and my husband is on the way home. I have finished making dinner either and we are going out tonight. Ruth Chris has a great late night happy hour pricing starting at nine and we are going there with husband's boss. Must get word count done before we go out. Gymnast child needs 8 pm pickup somewhere in my fast ending evening. I hope hubby doesn't mind doing pickup or I may actually miss my word count tonight. Too bad I can't bring myself to count forum posting... ;P
I am hoping nana will be easier than my current project, because it isn;t focussed on specific submission guidelines. I also hope that when I get further into HtTS I will get better at getting the words on paper. My present planning isn;t that good, but I do have the scene I should be writing rigth now planned out. I don't know why I am havign such a hard time actually writing it.

All things considered, I think Guild Wars can be casual... since there's no sub fees, I've played... disappeared for 6 months because life got crazy... and then hopped back on and kept going from where I was before, no problems. Guild Wars feels to me like a casual MMO... I know, I know, it's not your traditional persistent world, but that's why I like it so much. Plus, I don't need to devote my entire life to playing.
On the other hand, I'll admit that I'm now playing Aion as well, and quite enjoying it. :)
Games aside, I'm a month 2 student in HTTS, and of course, already behind on my lessons. Somehow I plan to catch up... somehow... before or during NaNo (haha). I have the same name on the course forum, so see you all around here and there!

LLDaugherty on the Sideways forums. Newbie to TS but this'll be my 8th NaNo. Because doing the TS course and NaNo isn't enough on my plate. *grin*
I've played City of Heroes since October 2004. It's a good casual game. No spawn camping, no raids. You can put in a few hours a week and you're not going to miss out on content or drops. I'd recommend the Virtue server to start. They have a large population and a lot of role players. All my characters are on Pinnacle, a small but mighty (mighty drunk that is... sorry, server in joke *grin*) server.

If I have learning anything from this year so far it has been that fiction writers are largely addicted to MMO's.
Why do you think that is?
My personal thought is that we like to be immersed in fiction. A MMO is definitely fiction.
