We all know that winning Nano is its own reward. Or even participating. Right? Of course!
But that doesn't mean we don't like to win physical things, like stickers, candy, a pet duck or pony! So this year I am announcing two contests with PRIZES!
The Sticker Competition: Who doesn't like stickers? Every time you come to an event, every time you meet a challenge, or use a word prompt, or tons of other things you'll get a sticker! (I'll have sticker sheets at the Kick-off party for people to fill out and extras to fill out as the month progresses.) The person who has the most stickers at the end of the month wins. If there is a tie there will be a five minute write-off at the TGIO party.
The Merit Badge Competition: Nano's more fun when you MAKE it fun, so for some crazy, err FUN, moments this year you can win a Merit "Badge." Jury's still out as to whether these will be physical badges or no. But the person who collects all ten (or nine or eight or seven) WINS another prize. If there is a tie there will be a five minute write-off at the TIGIO party. The badges are as follows
- NaNo Socializing - come to an event, Any event
- Word-Count Padding - Your characters pray the Lord's Prayer or recite the Pledge of Allegiance, ten times - its all words to me!
- Procrastination - Do you really need to do the laundry? Or feed the kids? But you put it off by writing? WIN!!
- Caffeine Abuse - Be it chocolate or coffee, or soda or any combination there of
- Secret Noveling - I won't tell that you're working on your novel instead of next month's budget or your science homework!
- Creative Nonfiction - Transcribe events around you. Add in a Great Coffee Spill or a suspicious money exchange as it happens!
- Rally Day - Are you behind? You can catch up! You can!! Or if you have a 5 digit day.
- the Eureka Moment - A character makes sense! You've figured out how you're going to make 50K! Or you just shout Eureka!
- Random Ending - November is ending, 50K is close and you still have much more story to tell - until you make sure you don't.
- Victory - 50K!!!

Woo hoo! So far, I have earned the Nano Socializing badge, the word count padding badge (hooray for random but relevant poetry and dream sequences!), the procrastination badge (my son didn't need that meal RIGHT then, did he?) and the Rally Day badge! (5,007 words! On my first day! Man am I proud of myself. I think that's the best badge, because I didn't think I could do 5,000 words in one day. Ever.)
It was awesome to meet everybody at the write in today. (Still wishes she had a laptop!) Thanks, Courtney, for the cool goody bags. :) MLs rule.
Now I will go and watch some football, because I, the novelist, have earned it. (Big grin.)

It was tough, but I made it passed 5,000. Wow, it feels pretty good. I have resisted going back and editing. Turning off spell check helps!

Ok I started writing at 2 pm on Nov 2 and at 4:20 AM on Nov. 3 I hit 5060 words!!!! So that's 5,060 words in 14 and a half hours!!! And I hand wrote all those words and my right hand feels like it's going to fall off. LOL I'm going to bed for an hour and half then I have to get the kids up for school. LOL Anyway... Just wanted to check in with the word count.
Oh does trying to fix a computer on Nov 1, count as the procastination badge? And I have been writing my novel today instead of doing my homework, so that's the secret noveling badge. If the fixing the broken computer doesn't count as procastination badge, just let me know. I know that I will get it at another time this month, I'm sure! LOL

I wrote most of today's words while I was at the doctor's office, supposedly having my eyes checked. Does that count as "secret noveling merit badge" material?
Ooh, I hope the badges are material ones, because then I could make a nifty Nano hat for next year. But just earning them is fun.

I had ANOTHER 5K word day today! (5,009) Go, me! I rock!
I swear, I have never tried this before Nano 08, and that was a miserable failure. I have no idea why this is going so well....(Not that I'm complaining or anything.)

Didn't know which forum topic to post this under...
I'm feeling terribly guilty (must be my Lutheran background) because I was so looking forward to NaNo since about July, did the write-in last Sunday, collected my goodie bag, and wrote about 3000 words before school on Monday. Then reality set in. It was rash of me to think that I could NaNo while teaching 4 classes, and in the past week I have had to grade 19 exams for one class, 52 essays and 22 exams for another class, write a Latin exam and grade 18 of those.
Will I return to NaNo 2009? I'll see what I can do tomorrow but it doesn't look promising.
All of this is to say, "do I have to return the goodie bag?"
All of you who are hanging in there, YOU ROCK!!!!!

Sounds like Joey will get a badge for procrastination on a far grander scale, but I did manage to do a bit myself today. Had the last six hours to write but instead, I've done three loads of laundry, moved furniture, cut stationery and set up a secondary office in the living room with my laptop and a spare monitor. I also did the dishes, cleaned my cat's litter box and killed some aliens that were invading my Playstation. Sound procrastinatory enough?

Joey! Don't give up completely. There are times when life gets in the way and reaching 50K isn't possible - but to even reach 20K in a month is a great feat. Just promise yourself you'll write when you can and won't give up. The experience is often more than the finish when it comes to Nano.
James - I think this is the best earning of a procrastination badge I have heard yet!

Speaking of earning a badge, I earned a rally badge. At about 11:50pm I hit 5,000 words for the day. I started at 10,820 but ended the day with 15,984. The 2K at the word war helped immensely. Hurray for literary verbosity!

NaNo Socializing = Kick off party and a writing in - check
Caffeine Abuse = a gallon of tea a day; two hot choclates a day and diet cokes - check
Procrastination = napping while supposed to be writing, surfing the web and checking email while supposed to be writing, reading fanfiction while supposed to be writing, watching TV while supposed to be writing putting me three days behind - check
Word Count Padding = the entire chapter of Daniel 6 in the New International Reader's Version and Jesus Loves Me (repeatedly), John 3:16 (repeatedly) and other scriptures about God's said over and over in a chant as to drown out lies told by a demon. And some of these I changed just a bit to add in the characters full name first, second, maiden, and last names - check
The Rally = first fourteen and half hours of writing, 5,000 and half words and I think that the other day I wrote about 5,000 words as well. Not too sure exactly where I started though. So this one is iffy, but the first 14 and half hours one got me this badge so - check
Secret Noveling = writing NaNo while I'm supposed to be doing homework and/or personal devotions. Also I was in a meeting and instead of taking notes, I was writing my novel - check.
Creative Nonfiction = Last Friday, while we were stopped at a red light, the passenger in the car ahead of us got out and flipped the driver off with both hands and started walking and sat outisde of a tabbaco store. Of course I had to put that into my novel!!!! And then I read a dare or a prompt about a food emergancy and considering that I had just made my MFC pregnant, I just had to put in my first craving while pregnant with my oldest -- Ranch Dip on Christmas Day when everyone is closed and all gas stations are out of Ranch Dip as well until hubby finds it at 7 or 8 pm. And then the word prompt ZOMBIES!!! I made my MFC 5 year old daughter watch The Night of the Living Dead with her 18 year old Uncle and his girlfriend and she had nightmares about Zombies. This happened when my hubby let my son watch The Night of the Living Dead with him. - check
Eureka Moment = I had no idea how I was going to bring my MFC back to God, but it happened. so - check
Random Ending = Yep, well I had wanted my MFC to bring her husband to God, but he came to God first and then helped to bring her back to God. and an unexpected glimpse into the Sprit Realm where we see an angel of God fight one of Satan's demons, so yeah - check
NaNoWriMo Victory = 50,013 words - check
I really didn't think I was going to get the random ending one nor did I think I was going to get the Eureka Moment. I thought I had it all planned out then the characters changed their minds on me and I had no idea how I going to get to the end result. So, I think I got all the badges!! Yeah!!!!
