A chance for NaNoWriMo writers in Marin County to check in.... and possibly coordinate some events on our own, in advance of splitting off into our own group next year.

I'm Jason. I live in Mill Valley and have completed NaNoWriMo the last three years. I've never actually been to a write-in, though I've threatened it in the past.

Anyway, I figured I'd make this thread for anyone who wants to sign in. :-)

Hi Jason,

I'm Kate and am in Larkspur. Car-less at the moment. Have just re-located to CA from OH (though have lived out here before). Was an ad hoc ML in Edinburgh, Scotland two years ago when the ML there bailed due to mysterious personal reasons. This might be my fifth year of Nano. Won three, I think. Am writing SF this year.

Hi Jason: This is my first year so I'm a novice on the lingo and the process, and I may seem a little slow on the uptake. I live in Corte Madera and hope this year's successful, winning experience will result in my joining again next year withThe Marin Thread. Nikki

Hi all!

Seventh year for me. I live in San Rafael and will be writing at Aroma Cafe on Wednesdays at 7pm. I'll wear my bold new NANOWRIMO hoodie, so I'm easy to find.

Hi All--

I live in Novato, and this is my second NaNo. I've been working on the outline for a novel and hope this year's Nano produces a draft that I can sink my teeth into after this madness is over. I'm not sure how active anyone can be on the forum during this process (I just kept my nose to the grindstone last year), but it would be great to feel connected to other writers in Marin.

Hi Jason and all Marin writers,

I live in Novato and this is my first time in NaNo. Look forward to meet more writers in Marin and hope in the future to start a fiction writing group.

I will try to go to Aroma in San Rafael next Wednesday.

Hi Jason and all,
This is my first NaNo. I tend to be very reclusive when I'm deep in a fiction project, so this is a totally different approach. But then, this project is radically different from anything I've ever done. I am very energized by this whole process right now. I don't know if it's having people to commiserate with, or having the outrageous deadline, or both - but as soon as I decided to do it and signed up, I was happier than I've been all year. Go figure!!

I will try to make the Aroma nights. I live in Corte Madera, so maybe we can do some meetings in Larkspur/Corte Madera. I'm picturing a stormy day at Tully's or Il Fornaio by the fireplace or something. Sausalito would be great for me too. There's nothing I like better than boats and water, and we have some excellent options there -- like the back room at Davino's. Yeah.

I'm Suzanna, by the way. I use Bell Sound as a pseudonym for some of my fiction, hence the moniker.

See ya'll!

Hi everyone,

Wow, this is great! So many Marin novelists this year! This will be my 5th go at NaNoWriMo. I wasn't able to finish in 2007 or 2008, but I have a feeling 2009 will be a very good year.
Here's to a successful 2009 for all Marin Wrimos!

Good luck everyone!
Hope to see you all Wednesday night at Aroma :-)

Hi Marin'ers, just checking in here from San Rafael, and looking forward to crossing paths with other WriMos. I joined last year in the middle of November, so this is really my first attempt at this. See you at Aroma!

Cheers,
Erika

Hi all, glad to see this thread! I just moved to Mill Valley from Portland, OR to be nearer to my Sausalito-based office, so I'm glad to see a good handful of fellow Marin County folks here :D

Great to hear everyone checking in. I work in the city, so getting anywhere in San Rafael by 7 is a challenge, but I'll see if I can give it a try sometime. Maybe there's a weekend event we can set up somewhere?

Hi Jason and everyone out her in Me Valley and other parts of Marin,
I'm happy and somewhat startled to peer out from under the rock I usually write under to realize there's signs of writerly NaNo life here in Marin!
This is, I think, my fourth attempt at NaNo--I've never completed any, but there's always a next time, which is the beauty of this contest!! I tend to be misanthropic when it comes to intense creative work, but I'm willing to try new techniques to help me finish this year. I may give the Aroma cafe write-in a go, and would also be up for any groups meeting at later times or possibly other days (Monday or Thursday, perchance???).
Anyways, I just wanted to connect and wish everyone best of luck as we collectively plunge into the mysteries coded within our individual treasure maps. Who knows what we'll pull up from the depths of our subconscious creative minds? Happy trawling!!

A quick check in about write-ins.

I just got an email from a Wrimo who wanted information about Marin write-ins, preferably in northern Marin. I emailed her a response, and have decided to post it here as well as it might help spur some of you on to making your own write-ins happen.

"The Write-In Calendar I sent in the email lists all known write-ins to date. However, there is a Marin thread in the forum, so check that out. Read through the posts. It sounds like a lot of Marin wrimos would love to get together and write...it just takes someone to say "Hey, how about meeting at..." That's how my Borders Books and Peets write-ins began, and they've been going for three years running now and well attended. And they are the only write-ins I have personally scheduled. The rest of what you see (including our library and Copperfields write-ins) were started by other wrimos like yourself.

I'm not very familiar with Northern Marin/Novato, but I think there a handful of cafes that you might be able to suggest as a location. Also, a small group of you can descend on your local library branch without needing to give prior notice. Ten or more and you might want to check with them first.

Good luck, and make sure to post any write-in you schedule (and want to announce to other wrimos so they can attend) in the forum. I would suggest posting it as it's own thread as I have done with the Sonoma County write-ins. That way, folks can see at a glance what's happening without having to weed through the Marin Thread to find the information."

Additionally, I'd like to add this note. Remember, write-ins are open to all region wrimos (and visiting wrimos as well). So if you're willing to travel, you are always welcome at Sonoma County write-ins. And once you've posted all the Marin write-ins I know you're going to schedule (I can feeeeeeel it coming) some of us Sonoma County NaNo Nuts might like to stop by, say hello, down a latte or two and pound the keyboard alongside you.

Have at it!

14 hours, 31 minutes and counting.

tick...tick...tick

Happy Writing Marin Wrimos!

Hi everyone.
There seems to be quite a few of us in Novato. Anyone up for a morning meet in one of our coffee houses? I'm a first timer also. Looking forward to meeting all.

Hello everyone!

I just discovered this project a few days ago, but I had just had the perfect novel idea a few days before so it looks like a match made in heaven.

I live in Bolinas, out in West Marin. I go into Marin or Sonoma a few days a week though to do shopping and what not, so I think I'll definitely want to add in some write-ins to my schedule.

Hopefully see some of you soon!

Alyssa

Hi guys, this is my first time and I didn't decide until late this afternoon. The good thing is, I didn't have time to worry.I'm looking at it as a mega free write and have committed to 2,000 words a day. It'll be fun to see what characters may develop and where they might take me. Outside of sending this comment I have absolutely no idea how this all works so please keep me posted. Have fun with sentences!

Hi, I am a first time WriMo too and I spend every other week in Novato (alternating with Cobb in Lake County). I would love to join other Novato writers at one of the coffee spots there next week. Are people still meeting at Dr. Insomnias? Was it Wednesdays?

Hi Clair,
Sounds good to me. 11AM Wednesdays at Dr. Insomnia's, Novato. I'll confirm here on Tuesday. Perhaps you can do the same for me.
Perhaps we should discuss how we will recognize each other.

Thanks to all who wrote to say welcome to Nano: this thing is already working on me!

I have 15000 words of novel written and am taking on Nano as a way to force the rest of the book out of me, no matter what time constraints exist. I'm hoping to get the 30 something thousand I need done with a big start through Nano, and I just sat down and wrote almost 2000, during my kids' playdate, a deeply unprecedented event.

Earplugs are essential, natch, and I was interrupted numerous times, but I just approached it with the deadline frame of mind...the Nano frame of mind. As much writing as possible as soon as possible, no looking back or over it.

I'm guilty of tinkering with past work as a warm up to new pages, and it's a time killer, I'm seeing now.

I'm looking forward to attending the Write In at Aroma on Wednesday night after 7.

My home region now is La Crosse, Wisconsin. I lived in Marin for about 20 years though. It's the setting for my novel. If I could teleport, I'd come to a write in there.

Welcome!
I'll work on the teleporting thing, since I'm doing a time travel. No promises, though.

Use our great group as a resource, if you need to.
Great to have you here.
