It occurred to me this morning that the National Portrait Gallery / American Art Museum's central courtyard might be a perfect write-in spot:

- It's free to get in.
- Easy access to bathrooms and snacks.
- Comfortably warm
- Plenty of seating, plenty of space to write without bothering other folks
- Surrounded by potential inspiration
- Centrally located for Metro, so just about anyone in DC or thereabouts can get there easily.

How much interest would there be in a Saturday afternoon write-in there, say, maybe 2 p.m. - 4 p.m.?

I like the location, but I would like something earlier in the day ... I'm inclined to start my writing as early as possible so that I have more flexibility to do more later if need be.

Sounds like a plan. I could probably make it two or three times.

I can't make the weekday write-ins (I work outside the District, sadly) but this is perfect and very close to my home for weekends. I'd love to do this!

Could you expand a little more on the snack situation? (Food and water are really important to me.)

There's a cafe adjacent to the courtyard, right near the museum shop, that sells snacks, coffee, bottled water, etc. It's open from 11:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. every day the museum's open.

A look at the museum's web site shows that there's also free public Wi-Fi available in the courtyard:

I could try to make at least one or two. I can almost definitely come the first Saturday. I'm probably going to be sick on the 14th (taking medication that'll make me hurt), but if it's not too bad, I could come. 21st & 28th I'll be out of town (hubby drives, I write!).

ETA: Based on my experience visiting, they don't search you or anything so you can totally bring snacks along (just don't eat in the museum proper, only the courtyard). There are water fountains by the bathrooms, only mildly...well, it's DC water but it's not really bad DC water.

Ooh, I'd love to come to a write-in at NPG/SAAM sometime--can't promise to make it every weekend, but would definitely come to one or two. What a great idea for a write in location!

I'm out of town the first Saturday, but I can make it to all the rest! That space is so lovely.

Whatever weekends I'm in town (I honestly never know when that will be anymore, lol) I'll be down for this!

It seems to me as if there's enough interest to add this write-in to the google calendar. Do you want me to PM krobin and ask them to add it?

I'm interested, though I have a feeling I'll be better working in isolation at home. I'd try it once at least! No talking!

This is a great idea, and now that tourist season is over it probably won't even be too crowded on the weekends. I'll definitely try to make it at least a couple of Saturdays.

Still trying to decide between DC and NoVA, but DC comes highly recommended. I'll come by and check it out, at least. :>

Given your very kind and positive response, this is now an official meetup. Feel free to keep on posting, though, if you think you'd like to attend!

I will be there every weekend except Thanksgiving weekend!

I would love to see weekday write-ins that aren't near Georgetown, too (as it is absolutely atrociously painful to get to Georgetown if you don't live there).

I'll be there when I can make it, too. Definitely not on Nov. 7, Most likely yes on Nov. 14 & 21, probably not on Nov. 28 (unless I stay in town for Thanksgiving).

Great idea!

There's some fun and crazy stuff in the folk art section. And a picture of John Adams looking like a ghoul over in the old portrait area (not the Presidential section...wonder why? ;) ). I'm excited!

I'm definitely interested in this write-in. I might not be able to make it the first Saturday, but I think every other Saturday is good.
