#NaNoWriMo - IRC channel (NaNoChat)

Hi, everyone! My name is Julie Martin (aka "juliebug") and I've been doing NaNoWriMo since November 1st, 2002. On that very day, I created the ever-popular #NaNoWriMo channel on my IRC server at GoodChatting.com. I was asked to write a sort of one-stop post for all the info relating to the chat community, so please do read this entire post.

First of all, the community has grown by leaps and bounds since 2002's original six or so regulars and has, in recent years, been accessible from the NaNo site itself, under "Fun Stuff". Due to various reasons, the chat is not accessible from the NaNo site this year. We'd like to thank the folks behind NaNoWriMo for their awesomeness in having our little chat channel be official for a few years!

That said, the chat, despite no longer being accessible from the NaNo site, is still alive and kicking, don't you worry! :)

There are a couple of ways for you to access the chat.

1) Java Applet. This is the same method (and applet) that was used by the NaNo site in past years, just hosted at a different location.

2) IRC client. It's highly encouraged that you connect using your own copy of an IRC (Internet Relay Chat) client. For Windows, we recommend mIRC (http://www.mirc.co.uk/get.html) and for Macs, we recommend Colloquy (http://colloquy.info/).

Within mIRC, for server, we're already listed. Find "Goodchatting - random server" and use that as your server to connect to. Once connected, type:

/join #nanowrimo

Et voila!

For Colloquy, here's all the pertinent information:

Port: 6667
Channel: #nanowrimo

I think that about sums everything up. We hope to see some of you dropping by the chat at some point. There's always someone conscious there as we are a 24 hour a day chat!
