Hi from the 'elder' table...does everyone have their book ideas? I was going to work on one of my WIP but I see it's recommended we begin with a new idea....I am stressing as to what I should write about...Normal I hope? Beginning to get the jitters with all you youngsters out there...sounds like I'll be learning from a fine group of nano-mates.

I just start free associating and a story spirals out of it.

oh yes, i have it all outlined. names, climax of story, etc. i am just finishing up some research on Osiris/resurrection/haitian voodoo, etc.

mine is supernatural, with old school traditions. i have a synopsis in my profile, but my more detailed plot is in the supernatural board.

I find ideas just about anywhere. The basic idea for the two main characters in The Mage King came from meeting two of my friends' sons. One was quiet, with a patient sense of humor and we couldn't get the other one to shut up - lol. They became Lyall and Jonah.

I should put my blurb up.

Eh, well, I know I want to do something about clones... that's about all I got though. I keep thinking of this one movie with clones and its hard to think of some new stuff.

I've been caught up with a novel that I am already writing, but I wanted to start from scratch for the purposes of NaNoWriMo. I just have to set some time before November to just think of new ideas. Anyone got any tips of how to create lots of new ideas? I know "just writing" can help.

Clones..that's different and sounds interesting. Like you I have a WIP that I wanted to use but I decided to follow the rules being it's my first time here and write something totally new....Ideas? hmmm, I watch people and try to make a story out of their actions, ex: if someone on cellphone, I'll imagine they're arguing with a significant other, or got bad news. A couple walking down the street I would wonder if they're married, having an affair or plotting to kill the landlord...I daydream alot and use those ideas but that's where my romance novels come..I'm trying to step out of my comfort zone with something new.

Good luck, I'm sure your idea will be great...thanks for sharing!

Well, I'm one of those sad people that had no time to do any kind of planning. I have a skeleton of an outline, but hopefully something will come from it.

Do we have a lot of scifi or fantasy writers here? (Curious b/c I fall in that category...)

Some of my novels here have been planned out while others sort of fall out during the month. Some are hijacked by characters (while escaping zombies in this world, go through a gateway and find a futu4re world where the goverment is creating zombies), while others don't move well because the characters aren't interested in participating.

My first Nano has become my second piublished novel.

Surf the net. Find bizarre sites. Take an unusual word and put into Google, then see what comes up. I've found some real interesting sites while looking for something completely different.

Open a book to any page, read a line, and turn it into a story. From reading An Old Man with Wings (I think that's the name of the story) by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, I've come up with a short story and the antagonist for my 3rd book.

Yahoo has an "Odd" or "Strange" news section. Read some of those articles for material.

When you start writing every day, it trains your mind to think more creatively and it opens your imagination so you see ideas in the world and around you that you hadn't seen before.

As far as genre: I'm writing "dark urban fantasy", which means horror lite. My first two novels are straight horror.
