Leaves are on the ground and a chill is in the air, which means it's finally novel season! NaNoWriMo is about to rock Athens, GA, and I can't wait to meet all our awesome new writers and returning novelists.

To kick things off, we're going to be meeting at Starbucks on Sunday, October 25 from 3:00 to 6:00. Starbucks is at 100 College Ave, right across the street from the UGA Arch. To find us, go up the stairs to the second floor and look for the guy in a neon green/yellow shirt that says "Yes, I am in charge here." That's me, Phillip, your friendly neighborhood ML.

There'll be fun games and a cookie cake, and a lot of great opportunities to meet some cool noveling types like yourself. I'll be showing up early to stake out as many couches and tables as we can--anyone else who wants to show up early and help me do so will be deeply appreciated. Bring yourself, bring your friends, bring your ideas--let's make NaNoWriMo 2009 an epic event.

See you soon!

Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it to this one, but I hope to get to one of the meet 'n greets this year. I actually work at the Starbucks in Athens on the Westside (across from the mall), so if anyone comes through the drive-thru at all during NaNoWriMo, I'm the big guy with the beard!

I'm afraid I work on Sundays. Thanks for the invite, though. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.

What do you mean "great meeting"? Where the $%&@ was everyone? Three of us sat there for two hours twiddling thumbs waiting for someone to show.

Where were you? We were sitting in the damned purple fluffy chairs waiting for people to show up from just after 3:15ish until 6:15 before we gave up because no one showed up.

Other people also arrived and left before we did because no one was there. Is there a screw up on WHERE it was at? Was it something more complicated than 2nd floor of Starbucks across from the Arches?

i went in, didn't see anything obviously nanowrimo-y (such as philip), and went to get something to eat, waffled about whether to go back, and decided against :(

I'm confused too? I walked in around 3:15...looked upstairs and downstairs and didn't see anybody NaNo-y at all! I even stalked these three girls with laptops to see if they were talking about writing : ) Can we coordinate better next time please??

Hey, guys, chill a bit. The group spilled over into a building on North Campus because we had gotten too big and loud for the studious atmosphere at Starbucks. I do agree someone probably should have hopped over to the Main Library (was it open? I have no idea =X) and thrown out the new info, but it's nothing to get incredibly angry about. Phillip was making rounds to pick up people at the Starbucks, but I think he got lost in our crazy mayhem around 3:45pm or so.

NaNo is supposed to be a supportive environment. I'm sorry that mistakes happen, but there's no need to start off with frustration before November. =)

Guys, I apologize that we lost a lot of you. It's entirely my fault, and I hate to see that we missed people at our kickoff.

By around 3:00 it became apparent that we had far too many people to properly hold the meeting at Starbucks. We waited there until around 3:20ish, then decided to move the increasingly large group to Demosthenian Hall on the UGA campus. At the time, I asked a few people studying in Starbucks if they could alert anyone they saw wandering around that we had moved, and where we had moved to. Knowing that this would be inadequate, I periodically darted back over to grab anyone we may have missed.

I was surprised at the number of people we had show up, and had some troubles figuring out how to handle things for such a large group. In this way, I'm afraid I rather dropped the ball. Unfortunately, there is no way for me to know who is coming, and few ways for me to contact people with a sudden change of plans. For next time, though: in case of problems, my phone number is four oh four, eight two four, four eight seven eight. If you have any trouble finding us, call or text me and I will do all I can to get you to the event.

Thanks, and apologies

Hey,

Philip, is there some way we could all meet up at the end of November to celebrate the end of all of that writing? We could pick a bigger venue so there wouldn't be any confusion. What do you think?

We'll definitely have a Thank God It's Over party at the end of the month. I think, right now, we're looking at a couple places, particularly Walker's, as someplace more relaxed and fun for our big finish. I'll keep y'all posted!
