I thought a thread for those of use who cut our teeth in the world of fan fiction might be a fun way to meet others and talk about this insane NaNoWriMo project.

It doesn't matter whether THIS project is fan fic, or an original, I think there is just some common ground among those of us who obsess in imaginary worlds and have used those to get our writer's feet wet.

I am Gnargles&Snorkaks at HPANA and have written 3 novel length fan fics there, along with several insane parodies and lots of short stories.

I am a rebel to NaNoWriMo because I am continuing a work in progress (the second in a Trilogy) that I hope to publish one day. Prior to my trilogy, I've completed one original novel, CONFLUENCE which I am in the process of polishing yet AGAIN so I can get an agent, publisher and such.

*waves at the Tart*

I'm Tundiel Mehtarion on HPANA, and although my dream is to write a 'real' book, so far I have only 'published' fan fiction. I have three completed longer stories posted on HPANA, and a multitude of short stories posted in my compilation thread, not to mention the two WIP long stories that are (still) running.

I guess my specialty is the good old tear-jerker, and it's probable that my NaNo will be in that genre. I don't have a clue what I am going to write about, but that's how I generally work anyway, so I'm no panicking (yet).

I think this whole thing will be good for me. I'm terrified of deadlines, and working to them normally kills my muse. If I can do this, I can do anything. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.

Hey there guys.

I'm SignedSealedWritten over at fanfiction.net, and I've written for quite a few of things - Criminal Minds, Percy Jackson, Twilight, Maximum Ride, Heartland, and I'm trying a few other things as well. My NaNo wont' be a fanfiction, it's an original, but I've got twenty four stories over on ff.net, one of them is novel length, the other two are getting close to novel length.

In addition to FF, I've written one novel, and two rough drafts of another. And of course, the one I'll be writing this year.

*waves* Hello there! I've got some old accounts at fanfiction.net and mediaminer (is it even running anymore? I haven't looked...) Real life ate my muse for a really long time, but she came back a couple months ago with some fun new fanfiction ideas. My fandoms are primarily Due South and Fruits Basket (anime anyone?), but I've also got a Doctor Who fic churning in the back of my brain. This November's project is a Due South novel.

Mini and Chloe--great to meet you!

And I hear the real life/muse conflict. I've been okay since I started having a few things going at once (an original I am concentrating on more, but a fanfic for when I am losing momentum or concentration (one of them VERY silly). It will be interesting this month to see how well I succeed in JUST doing the original.

Hello! It's good to see some familiar faces and to meet the new people. I am A.D.Figg On HPANA and I tend to lurk in the shadows reading but not commenting too often. I like to be a rare treat, i guess.

I heard about this NaNoWriMo for a couple of years now, but never really comprehended that it was something I could actually participate in.

Mostly I have just done some shorter one-shots and short stories for Harry Potter, but I read(well I used to, not so much lately) tons of other FanFic on LJ.
I have a few stories in notebooks that I chip away at from time to time, mostly while milking cows(where all my good ideas come to me). My sister tried to convince me to get one finished and sell it(she even set pages deadlines for me!), but I sorta wanked out on her. Hopefully you guys can be a better motivator for me.

Moo.

Hi!

You lured me in here, so here I am. Let the fun begin.

I´m using the same name on HPANA, where I have published all my writing so far. It will be fun to see whether I can come up with something original for this. I´m still feeling a bit uncomfortable by the fact that there will be no Snape in it, but I´ve another week to stop hyperventilating.

Auriga, I'm so happy you've joined this... and you can always have a Snapesque character! (wait... is anyone LIKE Snape? *snort*)

I really think fan fic is an excellent training ground for writing, and all most of us need to switch to original stuff is to give it a shot... You'll do great!

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I´m thinking about a Snape-like character. To bring in something original, I´ll dress him in dark grey. ;-)

I'm torn between chick-lit and a story that is more somber. Question is, which genre heading would the somber one fall into? (Can you guess that I'm leaning more towards the dark and twisty one?)

Are you thinking dark but interpersonal? Because I think that can still be chick lit. Dark personal journey or family stuff is more likely mainstrean I think. (or like bad experiential stuff). But LOOMING dark can be suspense if there is something to actually fear...

I never wrote/posted my stuff at HPANA but wrote Harry Potter fanfiction & posted it at fanfiction.net (as well as kiwibox, but that's another story....anyone remember that site?).

My name is the same, if you want to search for my stuff feel free. Some of the ficlets I'm still pretty pleased with. Haven't done much fanficiton in a few years tho, but always thoroughly enjoyed it.

Hey Veela-Valoom-great to meet you!

fanfiction.net of course I recognize... not the other... but I always feel some kinship with anyone so inspired by the Potterverse as to pick up a pen (or tap on a laptop) about it.

Since you said not for a while, I take it you are doing something fully original for NaNo?

That seems to be the consensus among the other people I've talked to, too. Still, we all share roots!

Hello! This is my first stab at original fiction. I write Twilight fanfiction (I'm afragilelittlehuman on FanFiction.net and Twilighted). I'm almost finished with my first multi-chapter story, a Twilight/Moonlight crossover, and I'm also working on a collaborative story. I think all the feedback I've gotten from my betas and reviews has helped me "refine" my writing, and I look forward to writing about characters that are completely my own.

Excellent! Glad to meet you fragile! And I totally agree--that feedback (and accountability) were what helped me finish the first time, too. I had written before that, but always in the closet (where it's very dark)

Yeah, I did something original last year & will this year too. I haven't written much this year (did Nano suck my energy last year or did life? Not sure) but I've got more in progress original stories than I have fanfictions now. Occasionally I work a bit on a sequel to one of my fanfictions, but have made not much progress on it. Fanfiction is such great practice as a writer no matter what anyone says. You have the puzzle pieces and the world, but you have to make the characters interact realistically in that world.

Last year I did YA fantasy, this year I believe I'm doing YA Sci-fi. No matter what I right YA, not sure how to even venture out of that genre.

*waves to Alicia* Yay, another familiar face! And Kas too!

And hello to everyone else who I've never met before too :)

I've decided on chick-lit, and the title will be 'Cardiffella'. It's a modern twist on Cinderella based in my home city. Of course, I'm usually quite scatty by nature, so I could change my mind before Sunday, but so far this is the idea I'm going with :)

Alicia! Great! I'm so glad you joined us! And Kas is here, and Courtney, who isn't a fan fic writer but IS a HPANAer and writer, so we've got quite a troop! I'm so excited!

I'm having some trouble with my WiP, so it is vaguely possible I will go with a new work at the last minute... sort of depends how the next few days go with writing. I really LIKE being a rebel though!

Hey, we KNOW you can do it! AWAKENING (my James Potter one) has 300,000 words... how is that for nuts? Granted, it took me 14 months to write, but through ALL of it I was also writing CONFLUENCE (my original novel)--I figure if I could write half a million words in just over a year, this ought to be just a teensy weensy boost... the big difference will be not switching back and forth between works.

In the past, if I hit a block in one work, I'd work on another for a while, but to allow myself THAT tool, I would have to set my wordcount goal considerably higher (so I hit the 50K in one). May still do that, though... I feel like that permission with the extra words will be better for my ability to go on (may not even need to USE it that way)

I will have to go read that *makes mental note*
i usually do about 2k per chapter, so i figure, if i can do that, then i can do AT LEAST that a day for NaNo and hit the 50k. by the end of the month. plus then i could still work on my fan fic. that one already has about 36k just in the first 16 chappies.
i tend to ramble sometimes...

Hi guys, I just got pointed here by Alicia, we've been chatting on HPANA and FB and it turns out we're both first time nanoers, which is pretty scary! I'm Amarantine over on HPANA (hehe, is it cheeky that I pretty much used my HPANA username to title my fic?!) I usually do write fanfic, actually, I have about two on the go at the moment (I say 'about two' because I'm forever writing new ones then forgetting about them, these two are ones I've been solidly working on) but my NaNo novel is going to be an original fantasy. I hope. I don't think I've really chatted to many of you, except Alicia, on HPANA, so yeah, I'm Siobhan, nice to meet you all!

Hi.

I don't know what HPANA is but the work I'm starting for NANO is a fanfic its called Dark Shadows, The Homecoming. It's my second fanfic, the first I wrote in 1971 about The Young Rebels, a short lived TV show set during the American Revolution.

Hi Belinda, and welcome! HPANA is a Harry Potter fansite. Technically it's not a site for fan fiction as such, but we have a brilliant group of authors on there and we have two forums specifically for HP fan fiction.

Siobhan - hi :) Welcome to NaNo madness! This is my first year too, and up until now I have been OK, but now we are less than 48 hours away from the kick-off, I'm feeling a bit OHMYGODWHATHAVEIDONE! *snorts*

I'm mostly panicking because I don't have a leptop (again! *dies*) I signed up for NaNo on the one day and the next day my laptop went kaput. There are two wroking PC's in my house, but neither are very conductive to my writing needs for various reasons. I'm going to have to write on paper first and then type it up as and when I can.

On the plus side, I had a few more idea for my story last night, so it is shaping up nicely. I have to make sure I remember everything though. I haven't written any plans down because I don't want to be tempted to start writing the story too early.

The story is a cross-genre - modern fantasy/chick-lit..... don't ask hahaha. Anywho, for those of you who might care, I'm 'Tundiel Mehtarion' on HPANA, but most people call me Tara (at least, I hope so...)

Siobhan-great to see you here too! Glad you’re participating, and fantasy sounds fabulous, as does the tempting hint the subtitle gives!

Belinda—nice to meet you! does your Daytime Diva in your title refer to a soap in particular (I love all the ABC ones—tend to watch them on YouTube--have been watching All my Children for 31 years now), and your story sounds great!

And I’ve had a last minute change of heart… No longer rebelling… gunna start fresh at Midnight Sunday morning… the thought had been written and stuffed in my ‘get to later’ folder fairly recently, but it is a brief idea… It will be a Conspiracy Thriller based thriller (no surprises there—that IS sort of what I seem to do with my original stuff) but much more actual government based… we’ll see how it goes…

I am going with the title at the Mo of DENIABILITY.
