Central Station Second Cup Write-Ins eh?
I'm totally up for it... if only I knew where Central Station was.... O_O
I moved here 15 months ago and I STILL don't know my way around all that much... oops.
If possible, can you tell me where it is in relation to the nearest metro station? Once I've got that down, I can get there I think.

It's kinda funny that I don't know the city yet though eh xD

@Saperlie: I think it's directly accessible from the Bonaventure metro station.

And don't worry, I moved onto the South Shore about 6 years ago and I still barely know my way around any further than my own neighbourhood. D;

@Laogeodritt: Well that definitely makes me feel better about myself. I know my way to Honore Beaugrand and somewhat downtown, but passed that, I'm stumped. XP

From the Bonaventure metro station, follow the signs for "Gare Centrale" and you'll get there. The Wednesday meetings are held at 7PM in the Second Cup off the main concourse in the station.

Last week there were three. This week there should be quite a few more. Once November hits there's usually a pretty good-sized crowd.
Alternately, there will be write-ins in the West Island (Chapters Pointe Claire) which typically had had between 5-10 people, but the crowd seems bigger this year.

I do believe that Pointe-Claire is a bit far for me, but if I can make it, I definitely will. Once I get to a write-in, how will I know that I'm the right people at the right place? Should I just yell write in and see who responds?

Generally, new topics will be posted for each write-in or other event, and those who will be attending often post a brief description of what they look like - so look for people who match the description.
Alternately, look for NaNoWriMo t-shirts, Nano stickers on laptops, NaNo signs folded on tables.
Feel free to try yelling as a last resort :)

Hi Katryne! Welcome to the club; nice to know NaNo successfully managed to swallow another poor full-time college student. I feel a little less alone. ;)

I feel a bit better knowing that you're in on this too; if you can try to write 50 000 words in a month, well then dammit so can I! Let's do our best together, kay? And remember to do that homework. Very important, it is.
I'll be able to join in on the Wedesnday write-ins this year! I hope to see you there. :) (As well as everyone else, of course.)

New, of a fashion, I am, since it was 2003 when I did complete NaNoWriMo in a rather solitary manner.

This year, completion, again - at long last, and solidarity!

I work full-time, go to school one night a week (down from two) and have been taking more photos than writing words of late. The plan is to balance out the scales and set down my Great Canadian Novel, of the literary sort, for the amazing fame and acclaim (teeheehee) that comes with life as a published author.

Oh yes, right, make sure to churn out all 50K worth of words this month so as there be summat to submit for print to the big few on the block.

Hello! This is my first year doing NaNoWriMo also.

Laogeodritt: I'm finishing up my bachelor's degree with a major in Zoology and a minor in English Literature and working part-time. November is going to be a crazy month what with midterms, papers and presentations to do in addition to writing a novel!

Meagean: there is a thread for get togethers in general (including the Central Station ones), and additional threads are running for get togethers in other locations (for example, if you're from the west island there's a thread for get togethers there)

I'm new as well! It's all very exciting and if I were an excitable person I might actually look less like a zombie right now and more like barney.

My name is Greg and I'm a 27 year old one time author (to date), born and raised in Montreal. I'm currently bumming around on disability pension due to a mental illness I struggle with, and have advocacy work on the side where I go give talks in schools about my experiences.

This is my first Nanowrimo and hopefully not my last. I'm a little bit behind on getting an outline... One day left and its Halloween. I can't guarantee that I'll attend the write-ins since I don't have a laptop and would have to wind up transferring the slow and painful way what I write by hand, but perhaps the launch party (or even more likely a closing one if we have it.)

There's an event going on at the Cote St-Luc library on November 10th at 7 pm where 5 or 6 local authors will be speaking a bit about their books, I think 12 minutes each. I'm going to be one of them and while my book isn't anything fantastically impressive its on an important subject so they were happy to put me on the list. If anyone wants to show up let me know, I live a half block away so I can indulge you in taffy flavored tea after or something.

This is my 2nd year doing Nano but I consider it my first really, since I kind of got bogged down by the madness of it and couldn't finish! :( this year I have vowed my revenge...so i'm glad there are meetups and people who are motivated! What do these meet ups consist of? How long do they last?

Write-ins are usually informal get-togethers - which does not mean they are not productive ones! While some Wrimos use this time to write in a setting that's different from their usual environment, others take advantage of the proximity of other Wrimos to discuss tricky plot segues, talk out their outlines, get ideas and help on narrative and character, or just chat about their novel-in-progress.

Last year, at one particularly memorable West Island event, Margo Lane made everyone present cram their mouths full of sugar cookies and then attempt to yell out "You BA$T#RD!" in order to see what we would actually say! Of course, it made its way into her novel... and a few cookie crumbs made it under the keyboard of a few laptops, I'd bet. :D

And to answer your other question: timing is pretty flexible. Usually a couple of hours, although it depends on your arrival time, and whatever time we get booted out of the location in question. Tonight's Chapters event will likely go 7pm to 9 pm.

Firstly, Welcome!
And secondly, it depends on the meet-up. The Central Station ones typically are opportunities to meet other wrimos and hang out for the evening, put faces to screen-names and such. The West Island Write-Ins are similar, but the people there are usually actually writing. Typically anything that says "write-in" will consist of people hanging out to write, where "meet-up" will indicate that conversation will prevail over word-count-padding. Often you'll see in the thread for the meet-up the general start-end times, often they're driven by the fact that the locale is closing at a certain time.

It's my first year with NaNo too and my first year living in Montreal. My sister did NaNo last year and that's how I heard about it. After her endless nagging I decided to do NaNo and hopefully get past my writer's block!

Are these meet-ups always on Wednesdays? I work Wednesday evenings so it would be tricky for me to make it before 8 or 8:30.

The Central station meetings are Wednesdays, the West Island ones are Mondays and Wednesdays.
If neither of those work for you then the best thing to do would be to post a new topic, with a night and location that works for you. We're a pretty big crowd in Montreal, so it's almost guaranteed that if you give a couple of days of advance notice, then other people will join you. Don't be shy! :)

I'd be delighted to get something going closer to Cote St Luc if you need another day. I have a couple friends doing this too so I'm sure I could at least fill a small crowd.

too bad that meets are Wednesdays, I work/study till 10.. thinking of having a sunday meet/write-in, anyone else in? Will probably start separate thread in the main forum, just wanted to say Hi!
