Would people like to suggest places to relax, write and reward ourselves with nice treats and good atmospehere?
I am going suggest Raw Sugar on Somerset - a very chilled cafe with art on the walls and magazines for inspiration, plus excellent service, coffee and treats. They are on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=21717726987&ref=ts
Anyone else?

Hmm
There's a book store and coffee bar on Wellington, across from the World of Maps.... It looked interesting and I looked in there a little bit, but not thoroughly enough to know for sure. But, I think it *might* be a decent place to write/snack/drink coffee or whatever. Since I'm not actually *in* Ottawa, I can't go check :(
The World of Maps is a nice place to check out too and would probably be pretty inspiring for anyone who wants to write about other places. Dad, brother, and I spent probably an hour in there after a dentist visit one summer day :).

The store you mentioned, Collected Works, is a great store. Unfortunately, I don't think there's actually a place to sit down and write... but they do have coffee. And books. Oh the amazing collection of books they possess. =)

Also, it's right next door to the Earl of Sussex, who make one of the best club sandwiches in the city.
Also also this topic reminded me to stock up on chocolate-covered espresso beans again. They work as both reward and encouragement! :D

There's also Bridgehead - many locations across Ottawa, including 3 along Richmond/Wellington in Westboro, several on Bank St from the top (Parliament) to just past Sunnyside. Though the wireless internet access could be a double-edged sword...
But they have lovely treats and drinks, and they're fair-trade / organic / friendly! The one near MEC on Richmond has nice tables near the window to watch people going by. :)

Yes, Bridgehead is very nice but it is often sooooo busy (well, the Holland/Wellington location) that there is no way you could sit. But just slightly further west on Wellington is a tea house (I forget the name). It is teeny tiny but it is usually very quiet. If it weren't busy I'm sure the owner would not mind you loitering for a little while. I sat there one meeting a friend for 1 hour and she didn't even flinch.
And if I remember Collected Works well, I think there is just a small coffee bar in the corner to pick up a coffee while you browse the store. Pretty risky if you ask me. LOL

Oh, and I assume Starbucks/Chapters was too obvious an answer.....but I actually like that place. It maybe be busy and noisy but it is more like a constant humming noise so it doesn't distract me.

As a less corporate alternative there is Planet Coffee in the market and Umi Cafe (a collective) on Somerset

Read's bookstore in Carleton Place has a small café.

There's a pretty quiet Starbucks on Carling and Woodroffe- for anyone in the West end... Great atmosphere!

My younger siblings like getting iced cappuccinos there... :) Probably some other stuff too.

What might be good for a late night coffee-writing-plus-snack place is either the Elgin St Diner or Dunn's on Elgin. Maybe the one in the Market as well. If you go at a quiet time, you might be able to stake out a small table for a few hours.

Late night at ESD is never quiet tho, not with the barflies and the club crowd packing it in after last call. Unless anyone crazy like me wants to go Sunday night/Monday morning. (I don't work on Mondays so I don't care~)

Denny's is also open 24 hours a day, and has free WiFi.
