How do you stop yourself from continuing an already started plot?

I have one major novel idea which I would love to keep going, and I keep finding that as Im throwing around ideas, I always fall back into that one... or a 2nd story that Ive been creating for a while now, and have started writing...

Cos I know Im not reaaalllly meant to continue a started story...

I DO have an outline that I wrote down ages ago, and the more i think about it, the more I remember what its told me about the story etc....

I still find Im more pulled towards my other started stories tho.. HELP!

Actually, last year I happily continued with my already in progress novel. I know TECHNICALLY it isn't what you're "supposed" to do but I like to make up my own rules for life and really, it was the best thing ever. At the end of November I had a 60,000 word count on my novel (editing and adding to it now). So I say run with your already started idea if that's what you want.

Except for the God of Nano who knoweth all things both in the coffee house and the library, of course.

At the end of the day who cares? Write, write like there is no tommorow. If you have an idea you want to write, write it.

I find the harder part is not jumping the gun and starting before the 1st.

I've never done NaNo before but that's the thing that's getting me, as well! I'm enjoying the planning, to a point, but to be honest it's getting really frustrating. And the thing is, I feel that I have a lot of planning to do, it's just I feel kind of unbalanced.

If I could just write a few words . . . just to really set the scene . . .

Just focus all the writing energy on writing a detailed plan...

trust me this will pay off later in the month.

Some people's plans are thousands of words long.

Not saying yours must be, but the more you plan the less likely you are to trip into a huge PLOT hole like I do, regularly LOL

I am now 1,000 words into a plan, and working out the holes before I start writing. I think it's helping. Last year I was more disorganised and suffered because of it.

The only time I won NaNo was in 2007 when I continued working on my 2006 NaNo, so... XD

I don't know. I'd say work with where your inspiration takes you. I reckon you'd just be fighting a losing battle otherwise. :/ Sure, working on a WIP is technically cheating, but it's an honour system and in the end, it's up to you whether you use the WIP or go with something brand new.

I came up with my plot idea while watching the episode of Celebrity Masterchef with Josh Thomas in it, wrote out the entire plan (w/character bios and the lot) that night and since then I've been tweaking, but to keep the muse, I've been writing short little scenes that, while are in the same universe that my story is set in, will never feature in it - eg. a scene between two minor characters, an awkward fail!date that they went on that may not even be mentioned in the story and isn't relevant at ALL, but helps me get/keep a feel for them.

Allowed/not allowed?

Oh well, only 24 minutes to wait now!

I'm working on two novels this year, which is a first for me. As the first one is draft three of last years nano, I do have the last two drafts already. I can tell you this, though, there's going to be very little copy/pasting. Much if not all of it is changing after some important feedback over the last year or so. I'm excited!
