Every day there is inevitably something I do to delay writing.

You've probably got them too. But it's going to be a long 30 days and since nobody wants to run short of a good procrastination...

I propose this thread for posting what you did to procrastinate today.

Did you:

After five weeks decide today was the day to call your mother?
Archive your e-mail?
Spend 45 minutes trying to win Spider Solitare?
Update your Facebook page?
File all that stuff on your desk?
Voluntarily fold laundry for the first time in your adult life?
Wash out the fridge?
Decide today was the perfect day to feed your kids their first non-frozen dinner of the week?
Text message for an hour?

You did something. I know you did. What was it?

Do your part to keep the rest of us from running out of ideas. ~_^

Day 1 and I'm already procrastinating -- fabulous. I played World of Warcraft for a couple hours online with a friend who has been sick. I tell myself it was to cheer up my friend...but I was totally procrastinating.

Then I came back and decided one of the minor characters I'd already written about in the first 400 words needed to be dead before the story starts, so I reworked it. So maybe it just needed to stew in the back of my brain a little before I got too far in.

(Or maybe I was just procrastinating.) ;-)

I'm writing a fan fiction story, so today I:

1. Watched BtVS S4E7 "The Initiative" (It was research. Really. Honest.)
2. Decided I really needed some inspirational images to stare at
3. Went surfing for screen capture software
4. Made a research file of pictures of the cell
5. Decided it was going to be such a nice day the plants should really go outside...
6. Decided I should re-read my already written prologue and Chap. 1 & 2 form like a year ago and then did it (They're not in my word count)
7. Researched straight jackets
8. Researched burst eardrums
9. Checked forums
10. Researched athletic resting heart rates
11. Debated on whether or not to buy a t-shirt because I don't buy or wear t-shirts with stuff on them but...

Let's see. Today I:

1. Messed around on Facebook.
2. Decided TODAY was the day to check out Last.fm and set up my user account with all of my favorite artists.
3. Decided today was the day to check out the forums here on NaNoWriMo
4. Talked to any friend who signed onto messenger

BUT I am a master procrastinator, because I ALSO have other things I need to do more than write this novel (I have more than passed today's word count goal), so writing my novel was actually procrastination from planning my wedding and doing my Chemistry. So any procrastinating on my novel was actually procrastinating procrastination.

Today I spent the better part of an hour cleaning a tarnished silver necklace (which I haven't worn in years & probably won't wear anytime soon), then I fixed a slow drain with baking soda and vinegar, did laundry, and did about eleventy-twelve gadjillion other things that did not involve writing my novel. I did get my minimum word count in, but not much more.

Back in college I would defrost the freezer whenever I had a major paper due. Sometimes I'd do it at 2 AM. Fortunately my roommate thought it was hilarious.

BUT! Were you on the server Misha? They have a NaNoWriMo Procrastinator guild on there just for that purpose. My character's name is "Iso", there. :D (I have another named Bleue.)

Today, after hitting 1,800 words, went to Best Buy to buy myself a new camera. Well, the thought of finally getting one to replace my old one sure helped words come a bit faster. Also, I had to do research before I went out to buy a new one, so I had to shop and compare prices online...

So yeah, my way of procrastinating is that I think, "I want to do a quote of the day for every day of NaNo." Then I have to go find them, and search them out and put them in perspective by week, and by day and so yeah.... And then tell everyone about it in the procrastionation thread. And console a friend who is having nano issues. Oh and check my PM box even though nobody really pm's me anything but "I want a write in here!" which is fine with me, but I keep on top of that. YOu never know. Then I find out what other ML's are up to, then haunt them for a while and lament over our word counts....

Yeah.

I balanced one of my history books on my head. This was my way of not only putting off writing but also delaying schoolwork. But, Mom, how can I read my history lesson when the book is on my head?

I kicked ass on the procrastination today!

First I read someone else's story and intimidated the hell out of myself.

Then I got depressed about my ability to write anything that would be interesting or could hang together and make an actual story.

Then I spent hours trying out websites and IM options with a writing buddy and trying to find something that would work for us if we were you know, actually doing that thing called writing.

Well, today was voting day and I hadn't done my research so...

I procrastinated from doing my research by writing my novel.

That worked out really well. It turns out that writing is much less painful than wading through candidates. ^_^

I procrastinated by deciding that I really, REALLY hated the novel I started, so I began a new one today. It is set in my old hometown (Kent, Ohio) so I had to spend hours on google maps looking at the street views, and reading up on the changes since I left in the mid-nineties.

So now I am caught up on my new novel, and am trying not to look sadly at the 3K from the other story. I never thought I'd quit and restart, but when the writing just isn't fun you have to make some changes. And catch up on old episodes of Ghost Whisperer. :-)

I very sadly watched years old Roseanne reruns. I was hoping that the sarcastic humor might inspire me.

*Sigh*

procrastination...your name is "Vampire Month".

Why does Chiller have to make November "Vampire Month"? All of my favorite movies will be on and I will feel like a looser every time I choose to watch them instead of my word count...

Today I procrastinated by watching too much InuYasha on Hulu.

But I never managed to get past Season 2 on Adult Swim... and Season 3 is so exciting and Rumiko Takahashi is such a great author! (That makes it like... research or a lesson.... Right?)

The fact that the computer is connected to the internet is just... dangerous.

I haven't been procrastinating at all this month--yay me!--but I did manage to take a tumble while out for a run yesterday. I fell hard onto the sidewalk and skinned both of my hands in a bad way when I landed. My right hand is skinned in the perfect spot on the outer edge of my wrist so that it hurts to both write AND type. Gaaah! This will definitely slow me down...

Well, I have already today I have managed to procrastinate very well.

I had the best reason ever!

One of my writing buddies asked for my help and sent me some stuff to look over...

And I have been thinking about her story ever since. Instead of my own.

And now I can't seem to return to my story. My brain just doesn't want to go there.

Other people's problems sure are more fun.

That Wordle link on the front page the other day has been prime procrastination material. I've been able to tell myself that I will eventually end up with the cover for my novel if I play with it long enough. In case you missed it and you too want to get sucked in: http://www.wordle.net/create

Also, Maureen Johnson's abridged version of Dan Brown's The Lost Symbol entitled: The Lost Symbol Reader's Guide has been hysterical: http://maureenjohnson.blogspot.com/2009/09/lost-symbol-readers-guide-par...

Which reminded me of The Editing Room, a site that has "abridged" versions of movies. The Twilight one is especially good... http://www.the-editing-room.com/twilight.html

The procrastination has been in fine form.

Procrastination has been in my house this weekend. Let's see... I changed the sheets, did five loads of laundry, cleaned the bathroom, put away the recycling, made chili and cornbread from scratch, went to Bexley to see a movie and the absolute worst thing I did was play a Facebook game all day. I swear... killing one's own hydra in Castle Age and getting other players to launch the weapons is a full time job. No wonder they give you 175 hours to kill the darn thing.

Here's another one: cleaning for the cleaning person. Because, you know, they can't clean the dining room table if there's stuff piled on top of it.
