Hi everyone,

My novel this year is about a guy who becomes completely infatuated with his girlfriend's sister, to the detriment of both his relationship and his mental health. I'm having trouble conveying the fact that despite his infatuation, he still cares deeply about the girl he's with. Any ideas about how I could convey the fact that he's essentially in love with two girls, both in the bedroom and in day to day life would be more than welcome.

Thanks!

It's possible to be in love with two people at the same time, I think... he probably doesn't see them in the same light obviously, but when he is with one sister, I can see him thinking about her and her and not so much about the other one, and same case if he is with the other sister. If they are both in the same room...I can see mental breakdowns... I've had crushes on people while I was in love with people, and of course love always outshines, but in love with both? *shakes head*

I would say that it is possible to be in love with two people at the same time, but you have to use what's DIFFERENT about the sisters to show how different parts of your MC are drawn out... Like he's drawn to one sister who's deep and mysterious, she intrigues him, while the other sister is warm and gregarious and sensual. Know what I mean?

I would set it up in a way that one of his needs (whatever it may be) is not filled by his current partner, but promised to be filled by her sister (it can be as simple as his girlfriend being sort of a homebody, while he would like some adventure).
That way he can be torn between them, as different parts of him would be drawn to either of the two.

Thanks so much everybody - this is all really useful and is giving me lots of good ideas :) The story is basically about his descent into depression as he attempts to deal with his feelings, so I think it's probably very likely indeed that there will be breakdowns!
