This is a shoutout thread for everyone who prefers to be save over being sorry and thus made a backup. Tell me about it. Let's keep this thread on the first page to make the rest of the forum to remember ;)
I am using a version management system why can synchronize to an online resource (in my case: github) and already backed up at least 3 times (lost count).

I am using yWriter which has autobackup and fancy backup buttons, amongst which a "backup using FTP" button. Well, I have access to a number of hosting packages with FTP, so I simply made an ftp account for the one I use most and filled in the details in the program, and I could click a single button to make a backup that's not on my computer!
However, by then I was spoiled. I like to backup on gmail accounts, as gmail itself is backep up on a dozen or so servers, meaning you are extremely safe. But as I said, I was spoiled now. I wanted it to happen automatically. So what I did is wrote a script that checks if the FTP-uploaded version is newer than the last one it sent to my gmail account, it will send it to my gmail account. And then I set it up so the script would run once every twenty minutes.
So yes, I can now hit a single button and have my backup on that ftp server replaced by a newer one, while it also means that I will receive it as a new backup on my gmail account. Top that!

I wonder if there is a thread called 'The I should back up my novel Shoutout'
Haha, I'd be first in line.
Unfortunately I haven't got a back up, but thanks to a sign above my computer which says something along the lines of 'Save as you go you bloody moron' I save alot. And if I ever type of Word, i have auto save set for every minute XD

I've backed up my novel in six different places. (i.e: saved to computer, emailed myself files from two different word processors, saved in private posts to dreamwidth and livejournal, and saved on CD.)

Done! I backed it up last night before crashing - I have it on three diff. computers (2 laptops and a desktop), and I also put it on a flash drive that we have used for the past two years. I need to back up my daughters today. I do have a copy of hers on the desktop she is writing on, and my laptop. So she's at least backed up somewhere.
We definitely need to keep reminding everyone. I know a lot of people who have lost a lot of work due to not backing it up.

I was going to save mine on my school's web storage, but I was concerned about that taking up too much space. It's now backed up on GoogleDocs and multiple emailings to myself. Which reminds me. Now I have to send it to myself again.

I back my novel up to my external hard drive/time machine everytime I update my word count on the website - that way, I'll (hopefully) always remember :)
Edit: But before the first backup I did, apparently I managed to delete an entire chapter and not realize it! *attempts to rewrite*

I keep it on a flashdrive so I can work on it anywhere, but back it up to an internal hard drive, Google Docs, two web servers, a second flashdrive, and will put a copy on y laptop when I get it. Yeah, I know that's unnecessary.

- Original file on laptop
- Which is synced to Windows Live Mesh, so automatically uploads it to there whenever I save
- Backed up on one memory stick
I might start emailing it to myself once I get further into it.

I save everything every fifteen minutes or so, and once I have a huge chunk completed (7-8K or so) I email it to myself. That way, even if the worst happens and my laptop commits suicide, I've got most of the novel backed up online and I can download it from my email server.

I did, yeah. Mainly because to document with my outline turned into a mess that could only be opened with the Text Editor with like, a space between every letter. I'm so not going through that with my novel. So, backed it up! Don't forget to back up important stuff you saved in different documents as well.

Maybe we should have a 'the back-up shoutout reminded me to back-up shoutout'.
Backed up to google docs, although paranoia is also leading me to back up elsewhere. It's only four thousand odd words so far, but damnit I will not lose it! Thanks for the reminder XD
