So there's only 3 hours left of day one. How did everyone do? Get your 1667 words in?

I'm sitting on 2412 at the moment, but I need to get to at least 3334 as I'm aiming for 100k this year. I wanted to do a 10k day today but I ended up sleeping the morning and most of the afternoon away and then procrastinating for the rest of the day. Oh well!

And I still don't have a plot. Meh.

How's everyone doing?

I'm in the same position, didn't do as well as I'd hoped today. We'll both do better tomorrow!

I'm well on the way to 3k now, but I have to go out for a couple of hours. Bring on some midnight nano-ing later!

I'm at 1732, but might manage a bit more yet tonight. My only goal was to at least get my 1667 words and I'm glad I managed it despite a rocky start! The idea of attempting 100k brings smoke out of my ears, so I admire those of you who are doing so!

Keep up the good work everybody

Feel free to kick sand in my face but I'm surprisingly proud of my first day total of 750 words. I offer no excuses for not hitting 1667 other than a bit of a cold and a compulsory tour of Ikea. My only worry is that I'm going to need more than two months to reach 50k words at this rate.

So as a first timer I'm wondering... does it usually start off slow and then speed up?

So far so okay, 2230. Not bad but I wanted to get in front as I know I will have some days on supply where bus journeys mean I am notebook writing and then typing up :) 100K! That's an awesome (if not scary) goal.

Happy writing everyone :)

All is well, have already built up a day off the grind in week two and three when reluctance sets in. I am just planning to stick to 50k, which is challenge enough for me.

Have got the phrase grin and wink into my novel, but am wondering how many bees i can get into a novel set in the depths of late Autumn winter. There will be a way I'm sure.

Gary, your 750 is a noble achievement. It is nearly a thousand more words than you wrote yesterday! People's writing experiences are different on nano. Most people start with enthusiasm but fall early as the wall kicks in in a few days time. Others start off gently and finish as a deadline looms. Some folk adhere to the 1667 words per day. What sort you are will be determined on this wacky voyage. Just write- word by word.

Well, like pangalactic I'm aiming for 100k again this year. Managed it last year in a fairly decent time span, and I finished off the first day at about 6k, so I think I'm heading in the right direction. Currently at nearly 8k! But, I do admit to a slight time advantage, being about 11 hours ahead over here in Japan at the moment (but I'm still adding my word count to good ol' Manny).

I'm actually hoping to get about 5k done a day (give or take a few thousand on good or bad days) and am thinking of trying to get my novel done sometime around day 20 or so, leaving the last 10 days free for study. Got a massive exam beginning of December. >.<

But like was just mentioned...NaNo seems to start off with much enthusiasm abound and then winds down. Especially in the middle of the month. Can only hope I don't get stuck in a rut half-way through!

:P

As day one draws to a close I have 4074 words. I was saying this morning I would be happy with 3000 words, and then I said 4000, and then I was thinking 5000, but eh, I'm just happy that I have this much at the moment. I usually would adhere to 3000, but as it's just been half term and I am ever so slightly worried about the amount of homework that is going to be thrown at me in the next week, so I'd better get those words in whilst I have the time... and no homework to do. :) So whilst I have the time, I'm going to write just a tad more than I usually would.

Eh, I might write some more in a minute. Last year I spent half the time blitzing my 1,500-2,000 words between 11pm and 12am since that was when I finished all my homework. It was also, funnily enough, the time I wrote my best things that happened! So hopefully that before-12-am magic will work its wonder for me.

As lots of people have said though, everyone goes at their own speed. Last year I wrote usually just over 2000 words a day, but round week three hit a wall and was only getting out 1200, so was greatful for the word bumper since I had to finish before the 25th anyway. Just write what you can; and don't push yourself too much. If the words are flowing, let them. If you want a break, have one. Just let your mind tick over things; it works.

I'm happy with my 2265. I'm going for 50k. I don't think I could commit to 100k without compromising my work/life balance and my employers, partner and kids would be furious!

Gary: there's been a lot of talk on Twitter about nano and developing a writing habit as the month goes on. Lots of people have started by freewriting to get used to it. Like Catherine said you created something today and that can only be a good thing.

Grin and wink. Hmmm not sure where they will fit in but I'll try to insert tomorrow. Bees - yep, I have bees as they are my all time favourite subject from the summer :-)

I;ve got a feeling that once I get back to work I won't be so confident about the 1667 words per day....

1910 for me. Would have liked to have got more, but it's been a really long day, and seeing as I didn't have a clue what I was going to write about when I sat at the computer I'm quite happy with that!
I'm just gonna try and beat the 1667 by as much as possible each day as I'm going on holiday on the 30th Nov so want to get finished a bit early to be sure!

Am impressed with the 100k'ers, you are braver than me!

Good luck everyone xxxx

I had a bit of a late start - after dinner time - and then I ended up fiddling around with the map I'd drawn of the main location so I lost the best part of an hour with that.

Once I started, though, it went fairly well. Just over 3,000 words is a good start I feel. I was hoping for better - along the lines of 5,000 but I kept getting stuck (or ideas - even worse sometimes) and ended up writing a lot of stuff out of order.

One good thing about today was the way - once I started writing - some of the plot elements I was really worried about simply fell into place.

So overall, a quite pleasing day. :D

835 for me. I'm actually pretty happy as I was able to do that in around about an hour so it is looking good for later in the week when I actually start earlier and get into the flow of the story (was doing prologue today).

Turned the PC on and typed a Paragraph.. then got called away to clear the garage..

606 for the first day.. I wanted higher.. At least I've got the phase, "make someone sing Soprano for a week!" (Which you should know it means "Kick to the crotch!") And I've got another joke of that!

1648 - although I didn't update until half 12 so technically it counts for tomorrow. It's making me sad that my first day will say 0 - at least I'll know in my heart I did it today (It's not tomorrow til i sleep!!) A moral victory!
I will do better tomorrow. (although I do have a 1648 head start technically)

And Paul, me too. I was too hungover to write when i woke up. Then I had to work - oh the joy.

And well done to everyone who's started. It's always hard to start off with a blank document laughing at you.

2342. Not as much as I'd hoped; in these opening stages I'm actually rewriting and expanding a short story I wrote last year, which is both easier and harder than making stuff up from scratch.

I'm still trying to nail my outline down too, and got further with that today, so I'm reasonably satisfied.

(How can you folks manage to write so much without "a plot"? I need an outline or I'm totally stumped! ;)

Hangover and illness is not a good recipe for words. It took me hours to hit the 1,000 word mark. But I'm gonna give it a real push tonight and hopefully write 5k.

I hit 1550 on day one. Very confident of catching up without trouble this week though I have to take one day off entirely.

I hit 1712 on day 1 but the plot had more holes than the Titanic. Just done my day 2 ( finished on 3602) and had a really good writing session ( or 2 - 3 ) sessions. Its still dodgy but I am enjoying this challenge. Hopefully it will give my writing a good kick start.

Hit just over 2000 yesterday. It was hard and then it started flowing. Need to type some more...

NOT HITTING YOUR WORD COUNT?
Throw in something that you like to stir it up. For me that would be a ninja, or a comedy situation. Doesn't matter if its ridiculous, use it. Good luck.

Plot ninjas are ninjas that you randomly throw into your story because its slowing down. They interact with your characters and make stuff happen. When December rolls around, you edit them out but leave in the effects that they had - usually awesome effec

I did pretty well I think, for me anyways XD 2099 words, which is good considering I usually only write 700-1000 words usually at one time.

Pretty good. I managed something like 4500, maybe 5000 (I did a bit in a notebook that I didn't have chance to type up). I'm only aiming for 50k, but I'd like to finish the story wherever that ends up being. So hopefully that'll go a bit longer...

Today is my first day - I read about NaNoWriMo a while back but it sounded too scary so didn't bother. Then today I just decided to go for it - why not? My partner and I are hoping to have another baby next November-time so I thought I should do it this year as I may not get chance next year.

I'm on quite a few words though and I'm fairly proud of myself as I normally get terrible writers block after 500 or so words.
