I've found that one of my biggest motivations during NaNo is competition, so here the forum is, restored from last year, and the year before. Hopefully we can encourage each other to new heights through intense competition.

Hehe, my favorite thread.
Have an estimated-date-of-completion yet Samil? How about the rest of you? Quite a few people seem to have started out with a bang this year, if you look through the Who's Who thread. Keep up the good work, everyone!

Probably the 10th, since I'm going for three novels this year, I've got to finish one every ten days. So that'll give you a mark to shoot for ;)

Holy cow! 150,000 words this month? You must have way more time than I do! I'm definitely impressed. Good luck! I'll be happy if I finish mine in time for the month to end. I've never done NaNo before, but I'm having fun so far!

Yeah, my competitive side is getting the better of me right now. Shooting for 2K on weekdays and 6K-8K on weekends.

But it's good to see us ahead of Boulder...at least for now.

I didn't know you'd been competing against me, but I've certainly been chasing you. I have a paper due Thursday or Friday that I have to finish and then I'll really get in gear, but at this rate I'm worried you'll be finished by then. Damn it, I can't ruin my streak...

Aaw, I'm sorry guys. :( Don't be scared away, we love you lots and lots. We're just a little competitive, and I don't like loosing to Samil. We love you anyway, and you are doing much better than you have to be to be on track. <3
If it makes you feel better, I'm stuck writing a paper and am not going to get anything done untill I've finished that. Why is it easier to write 10,000 words of fiction than eight pages of lit paper?

It's all good, May. We all have our pace. I'm spending one hour per weekday and two on weekend days. I do about 2000 words per hour. If I could do 4 hours a day writing, I'd be halfway done by now, but that's not possible.

Right now, I feel pretty dang good about my pace, my story, my characters, and my writing, so I can't complain.

Yeah. I think I write about 2500 an hour when I'm working intensely, but mostly I tend to write in breaks between classes, so I get three hundred words there and seven hundred here and it adds up. And then I play catch up to whatever my daily goal was in the evenings after I finish homework and until my roommate (who is also NaNoing) makes it to her daily count.

What about the rest of you? How do you work, when in competitive mode or just normal mode? Is there a difference? I know there is for me.

Normally, I write for 30 minutes a day, with more time for editing, outlining, etc. But I'm liking this pace NaNo has me setting. Keeps things fresh and interesting.

I write at night, because that's when I have time. I'm better at writing in the morning, but work keeps me hopping, so I can't do that. So generally about 7 or 8 at night I hit the comp.

I can get 1500 words in an hour, so I set a time when I've got the time available and get to it. Usually I aim for 2 hours on weekdays and 4 to 5 on the weekends.

I'm back in school now, not something I've ever really had to deal with for NaNo, so we'll see how I keep managing to work around it. :/

Somehow, despite actually setting aside time earlier in the day, I just can't seem to get pumping until about 5 or 6. It must be the time crunch issues. So I generally do other things before that time, even when my schedule is open. Fortunately, I've discovered that my editing times and my rough draft times are different, so they tend not to conflict too much. I can, in good hours get about 2k out, but most of the time I write around 1200 words in an hour. I guess I'm a little slower than some people, just I have more time.

I write when I get up *around ten or eleven* and take a break for life then write on through the night! LAtely though I've been taking my laptop to my mom's doctor appointments and writing while I'm waiting for her. It's just a bit awkward at times when you want to laugh at what your characters doing but you don't want to look like a total fruitloop to the secretary.

I have no idea how fast I write.

AH! Hahahaha! For a whole day...according to my NaNo Stats chart on my profile, I was at 255,307 words! I think I win...
I had the hilarious misfortune of entering my word count wrong at 11:59. I didn't notice until today (the 6th) so now I've messed up my NaNo progress meter. Not only did I write 235,000 words on the 5th, but I also deleted 230,000 on the 6th...

Fortunately, it does look like I've evened up the race a bit.

Wow, Mystwalker, impressive jump on day four! I wish I days like that, it would make beating Samil quite a bit easier.
Also, I just noticed your "location." Best. Thing. Ever. Can I transfer with you?

Well, I'll have to ask Rumbleroar ... but I don't see why not. Do you have your space suit ready?

I started using Write or Die. On Kamikaze. Besides, what are you complaining about? Look at YOUR word count!!

Question -- do we get to actually read each others stories? Because I am seriously curious and want to know what other people write. OK, so I'm nosy. Whatever you want to call it.

Ah! No! You weekend warriors are getting so far ahead of me...and I have so many obligations tomorrow...AH!!!!!!!!!

Also, to Mystwalker, typically at the TGIO party we share small excerpts from our novels. It's pretty awesome. It's fascinating to hear all the different things people did for NaNo.

Wow! Look at you guys. So far out in front it's not even funny. Nice work.

On the "more important" front than the personal competition -- looks like Boulder is gaining on us, despite our best efforts. I think we cannot allow them to pass us...

Good morning, sunshine. I hope everyone has had a lovely day, and pounded out hundreds of thousands of words to beat Boulder (and heck, why not Seattle, too!) with.
We can do it!

LOL, well, looks like May is first of this bunch to 50K. Nice work!

And we've widened that gap with the Boulder-ites quite a bit! I'm on course, hoping to be halfway by Monday. At that point, I'll take a day off to outline a bit further ahead. Otherwise, things go all haywire and randomness happens.

Randomness never hurts!

After being sick on Thursday and Friday, I've been pushing really hard to get to 20k today, and tomorrow 25. Then I have to study for my Latin test on Monday. o_o

Congrats May!

Haywire disconnected randomness hurts the plotline and confuses the reader, though.

Looks like you made your goal for today. Mine is 24K tomorrow. 25K if I can do it. Then a one-day outlining break.

Hooray, Samil!
I'd challenge you to 100, only I have no time to do homework, let alone NaNo, so I'd fail woefully and you'd never let me live it down. ;)
