I've found one proposed write-in that's near me, and I wish I could attend some others. But--and does anyone else have this worry?--I'm really reluctant to spend valuable time in transit to get somewhere to do something that I'm already doing on a tight schedule in my apartment anyway. But I'd really like to meet some people, so I feel kinda stuck either way.
Anyone else flying solo?

I would try not to fly solo if possible. I find the write in's super helpful and writing solo every 200 or words I find something else to do. Whereas at the write it I dont even think about procrastinating until every 1000 words

For me, nothing is more inspiring than being in a room of 50+ other writers who are all hard at work.

I agree with you, Black_Magic. The kick-off write-in was my first, and I found that I work much better at home because it's hard for me to concentrate around other people -- I have quirky writer habits of getting up and walking around and talking to myself and I lose my train of thought when I can't do that freely. And with the smaller write-ins lasting just a couple hours, by the time I got there and set up it would be time to pack up and go. It's definitely not worth it to me to spend the better part of an hour each way in transit on top of that, especially in the dark.
I do intend to go to a few of the write-ins that are very close to me, but it'll be for fun and socialness. Not for Serious Writing. And there's nothing wrong with not being able to work that way.

I'm with Grace on this one, I think. I get so much more done when there are a bunch of other crazy writers around me getting their creative on. At home I tend to just find excuses to slack off.
Everyone has their own habits and quirks as a writer. If flying solo works best for you, then it's really awesome that you've figured that out. However, I really hope do come to some write-ins if you can (and have a good bit of padding on your word count that will allow for it).
One of the best things about this month is all the awesome people you meet!

ditto, which kinda sucks cause I'm new to Boston and would love to meet some fellow Nanos up here, but with my notes and novel bound to a desktop, well, I hope to see everyone at the TGIO party, then ^_^/

There were folks with notebooks and pens at the write-in on Sunday. You don't need a laptop to join in the fun!

THIS YES
This could be an entire topic in and of itself haha.
Even just forcing myself to write somewhere that isn't my house, whether or not other people are involved, ups my productivity by like 100%. Even taking into account travel time... I probably just would have been using those minutes to play with the cat anyway, so it's not like I lose anything.
But yeah everyone works differently. There are a lot of people who are more disciplined than I am. :)
