I have exactly that problem. I've spent over 20k words developing my main characters and getting the reader emotionally attached so the crisis will be meaningful. I need to introduce the crisis in the next 10k and then who knows how many thousands of words it's going to take to build the crisis, have my main character overcome it and wrap everything up nicely. I don't know how long my novel will be, but it will most definitely be longer than 50k.

I haven't had a story yet fit within 50k. My shortest novel was at the high end of 60k, and when I read over it I felt like it was way too short and lacked any real descriptions or character moments. I know this story will be over 50k. I expect to hit 50k in another few chapters and my story is no where near finished. I'll probably hit over a 100k again.

I knew when I started that it would be. I'm actually working on my novel=in=progress. I'm trying to get each part up to 50,000 words.

This isn't a problem. You don't have to "finish" your nano novel in the month to win, just meet the 50,000 word goal. Chances are, most novels are meant to be more words than that cuz 50,000 words ends up being a skinny book.

I suspect that mine will be before I edit, but I am going to have to do some serious editing, because though I had planned for "young adult," there is definitely some very NOT FOR young adult content... after I edit and fix things, I think it'll be closer to 50k

I wouldn't call it a problem, but yes, I realized my novel would end up being MUCH longer than 50k a few days ago. This won't be the first time, it happened with my '07 novel as well and last year's to a lesser extent. There's a time jump that's intended to serve as the halfway point for the story, and I'm not even CLOSE to getting to that point yet and I'm closing in on 30k.

I also don't see it as a problem that my novel will be about 80K. I'm going to try to get to 50K this month and then I will have a story that is so far written that I will finish it happily in the months to come.
Last year I wrote a 50K novel during Nano and when I read it back this summer it was okay but it was too short to feel like a real lengthy novel, so I am very happy to see that this year my novel is advancing much more slowly and that the story is way better developed.
So don't panic if your novel will be over 50K but rather enjoy it! After Nano we can all go straight into Nanofimo (national novel finishing month) in december... ;-)

Am getting that feeling . . . but meh, I've got another WIP HP fic that is 130K plus, so this one is kinda tiny in comparison. :)

I wouldn't sweat it if your story ends up taking more than 50k words to complete. I read somewhere, before I ever signed up for Nano, that the average novel is between 70,000 and 140,000 words. But if you're anything like me, having a deadline for those first 50k is the difference between the novel actually getting written or sitting around in my head for years.

My novel is going to be well over 50k, but it certainly isn't getting finished in November. Between getting sick just in time to be too loopy to write for the first week of November and the assorted projects due at the end of November, I'm just hoping I'll make 50k in time.

I had thought that my novel was going to be short of 50K. Turns out that this novel of mine might even shoot to 75K. I'm only in the start of the third part of it.

I wasn't sure how long mine was going to end up. I obviously hoped for 50k but now that I'm well into it, there are definitely more things I want to add and I'm thinking its going to be way more than 50k but I will just get to the end of November and have something extra to do during the winter months.

I just finished the first of four parts of my novel. It's a tad over 50k.
I always tend to grossly underestimate the size of my projects, because the more time I spend with them, the more expansive the themes they contain get. So I won't be surprised if the novel itself clocks in at 200k and I have to split it into two volumes or something.
And no way am I going to be shooting to finish it in November xD Or even this year, for that matter.
Ahhh exams coming, must keep going...

I'm continuing the story I won with last year, so I already knew it was going to end up as a minimum of 100K. I can't really give an estimate of how long it will end up, because stuff keeps happening and I can get very long-winded when I get going. But it's fun, so to heck with it.

Novel length is technically 60,000 words plus, but I don't think much gets published that's far under 100k. The 50k goal was chosen (I believe) because it's attainable even if you have other obligations, like a job or kids, and it's still a respectable number of words to hack out in thirty days.

I'll be a contrarian and say that my novel will probably be just over 50k, but not much more. I tend to tie up loose ends right as I get to the 50k mark anyway. At least, that's what happened in my lasy however many novels I wrote, I think it's 5.
Actually, if I had continued my first NaNo novel through to its conclusion, it would have been hovering around 100k. However, I split it up into two parts and wrote one part the first year and the second part the second year. It was kind of interesting like that.
I really don't see this novel ending up being very much longer than 50k, but I'll see if I use up all my ideas in the first 50k before I really decide how long it needs to be.

Mine lacks a lot of descriptive prose about things (I'm not good with the flowery description on the fly) and I'm about halfway to 50k, and I'll say there's no chance I'll have wrapped up the storyline in under 50k. Regardless, even if I have to extend into December I want to finish the narrative. Problem is, I don't really know where the story is going to end up nor who the main antagonists are, so I'm pretty much along for the ride as my character maneuver through the plot.
I'm not complaining though, it's a pretty fun ride.

I have a habit of writing over 50K, but this one is probably going to be way over 50K, especially since I hit 40K yesterday and am going to my regions night of writing dangerously this weekend. I may have 50K before Sunday, :-D, but I definately won't be done with the story.
This was only supposed to be a single book, now it's looking like it's going to be book one in a series, like all my stories.

I outlined 20 chapters. I'm on chapter 5 (nearly done) and halfway done with the story so I am thinking I might go wayyy over. If I get to 80k words though I might end up cutting a chapter that I have in the outline. My other novel is about 110k.

The way my book is going, it'll be more like 80K by the time I'm done. The thing is, it's so closely intertwined with the other NaNos I've done the past while, the finishing will be coupled with some serious, serious editing.

In my planning for this novel, I wrote 30 points that I was going to cover in the book, to give myself some direction. I got to point 13 and only had 15k. I was very worried that I wasn't going to get to 50k. I am now on point 15, and I'm at 40k xD Obviously, the middle bit was quite wordy.
^^
So yeah, I'll be getting over 50k. I have no idea where I'll finish.

I tend to be long winded, so I know both of my novels are going to end up longer than 50K. The Fantasy one I'm working on will probably be about 120K after I'm done with it, and the Urban Fantasy one will probably be about 75K or so. I just have a hard time writing things that are as "short" (technically speaking, not that 50K is short OR easy to do) as 50K!

Last time I did NaNo, I got to 50k and was looking at maybe as little as a 5% finished story.
This year isn't looking much better. 26k and I'm still on day three. My main character thinks way too much.

I'm pretty sure this year's nano for me is gonna be more than 50k. last years was 50,079 something, the actual total escapes me. this year's book has more branches to cover, so yea, it's bound to be 50k and over. I just hope i have enough of the branches to start next years book, which will end the trilogy i've worked on since last year.
