...why can't we?
Would anyone be interested in a write-in happy hour? Or late-night? Just something involving booze/beer? I have a friend who swears by writing in a bar (and I can hold my liquor better than my coffee). I'm in the Capital area, but I could travel some (not by car, of course!).

yes. Yes. A thousand times YES!
Bex and I were already kind of thinking of doing that one night at Barriques Market at 5957 McKee Rd in Fitchburg. http://www.barriquesmarket.com/ The beauty of that place is that it is a coffee shop that also sells bottles of wine and beer which you can consume while sitting on comfy chairs. Although I understand the want of some place where you wouldn't have to drive. If a downtown place can be found I would be all in.
The usual problems I have with writing in bars is that it is usually dark and noisy and not much for good writing seating.
A decent place where I sometimes find myself writing at is the Alchemy at 1980 Atwood Avenue http://www.alchemycafe.net/. They are decent because they have free wifi. But their seating selection is limited to typical bar/resturaunt style and I don't know how well that would work out if more than a couple of people showed up.
If a good place is found I will be there.

I'm leaning towards Friday evening or possibly Wednesday evening this week. A Friday Wine & Write may be the perfect way to end a week! Barrique's is open until 10pm Thu-Sat and until 9pm on Mon-Wed.

There is a Barriques downtown at 127 W Washington. I could get there, but I'd have to pass on the Fitchburg location.
I've always enjoyed Brocach's atmosphere, especially weekend afternoons and happy hour hours. Silver Dollar, Frequency, the Great Dane are all pretty wonderful when it's quiet (around happy hours). But frankly, I like pretty much every bar downtown (except the more dirty University Ave dives like Red Shed or Churchkey). I'm not sure about the wi-fi, though...

I'd be interested in going to the Barrique's on McKee, I live kind of close to there

I can hardly wait until next week when my MAIN "obligation" will be my NaNo.....and I'll be VERY interested in trying out any of these locations (I'm all but walking-distance from Barriques on McKee). Also.......I DO have a car, and would be happy to tool around and collect fellow WriMos who may not -- think of my car as a Rolling Flashdrive :o)
In the meantime, I'm thinking of buying a bottle of Absinthe ("wormwood GRANDE"), a heavy glass ashtray -- probably find one at St Vinnie's -- and sitting around with a fedora.....
GEE! I wonder if we could arrange a write-in at the Casbah -they really DO have hookahs!! (What a photo op for the blog, if nothing else!)

Dale, I'll be sure to let you know when I end up at Barriques on McKee. My work isn't to far from there so I sometimes end up there to write.
As for the other Barriques in town, I don't think they all have beer. I think the Fitchburg one is pretty unique in that fashion.
Speaking of Absinthe, the Malt House at 2609 E Washington Ave http://malthousefan.wordpress.com/ (the only website I could find was a fan site) is a craft beer bar and I know they have Absinthe. It is a fun place, but they don't have wifi. Also, it can get pretty busy in there.
mmmmm Fedoras. I finally got around to digging mine back out yesterday. Hopefully it'll inspire for writing. If an old-timey picture is needed, then I would have to bust out the white shirt and black tie as well.
I don't think there are hookas at the Casbah any more. You know, that whole no smoking ban and what not. I could have sworn that I heard that they went out of business. There is nothing on the website http://www.thecasbahrestaurant.com/. Can anyone confirm if they are still around or not?

I'd be in for one of these excursions. I have a car, so I could get to an off-campus site, and if any other of-age students wanted a ride, I'd be more than willing to pick a few people up!

Casbah IS still open, but you can only smoke hookah outside (nowadays, that's less pleasurable). As much as I like the smoking ban, I think it's fairly ridiculous that Casbah has to make its patrons smoke hookah outside, but right next door is Maduro cigar bar, in which, not only can you smoke (just cigars, though), you can BUY the cigars.
...but I really like Maduro still, though.
I haven't yet been to Malt House, but I'm really excited to check it out soon. I've heard the actual bar has been around since the Civil War, hence its old name the Union House. How's THAT for atmosphere!
So mad the Angelic isn't open anymore...that would have been great to write in...

Its good to hear that the Casbah is still open. I've never been there and probably should get there some day.
I've heard good things about Maduro too.
Not only has the Malt House/Union House been around since the civil war, but the actual bar is the original. You know, the big wood thing at which you rest your drinks and the giant mirror behind it. Makes it pretty cool.

Friends and Countrymen --
My program is to be delivered Saturday at 3:00 (actually 3-4:30...whoooah) and after that I'll be able to join the write-ins and I'm looking forward to it. Barriques on McKee is easy for me, I LOVE Starbux on State - and I do have a car so I can get around (and would be happy to collect folks if it'll help out).
