Is there any chance of getting a API entry point to update the word count? Programmaticly updating the word count, even if the API only permitted submissions for a user every few minutes, would actually help me a quite a bit.
Thanks!

It won't happen this year, most likely, but this is a great suggestion for next year. I'll move this over to the suggestions forum (this one is for tech help questions)

Is this something that I could by any chance help implement? If I had a copy of the source, I'd guess I could have it banged out in an evening. (In the real world, I'm a software developer by day; this is what I do. :)

Yes! Let us help! I've got my wife all set up so it will automatically send her word count to Twitter when she closes her story. It wouldn't take much more to be able to update her Official Word Count, here.

Here's another software developer offering help to implement this API feature so we can all have our fancy tools automatically update our word counts for us. :)
