Hey my fellow yinzers, is there anyone else out there attempting to write a fantasy novel? This is my first time going *true* fantasy (with all the made-up creatures and adventures and 'chosen one' heroine and all that), and I'm getting stuck early... I want to write some romance! I know there's eventually going to be a love story, but it's kind of the end of things, and I'm getting frustrated NOW!

So those of you who are writing fantasy... How's it going? What's happening in your novels? Am I too far along to quit and write Chick Lit for the remaining 25 days??

I hear you on the new territory side, but I am not actually writing fantasy. Going with science fiction myself, but all the things about my story that got me really jazzed to write it just aren't anymore or are just too far away in the story to inspire me now. All I keep trying to tell myself is that you'll get there, just be patient. Too be honest though, I wouldn't mind starting all over with a different idea. Problem is I have no clue what I would write about instead.

Mine is fantasy, though it's much more on the post-apocalyptic realism side of things. There will be romance, but not before there's some heavy duty angsting going on. :3

What's the most difficult thing for you guys? For me, it's trying to keep my narrator in character. xD

I'm working completely in third person omniscient, so that's not really an issue. I just seem to be getting bored with my story before it has had a chance to get to the good stuff. It seems to be a recurring theme because I have written short stories in the past, but I get anxious to write the end so I just rush through the middle bit and sacrifice some possibly really essential parts of the plot.

I did fantasy my second year. Start the romance early, why not? And if nothing else, add some kind of cool vehicle. I had this awesome sub that could not exist in real life, worked out well for me.

I'm writing fantasy, although I'd consider it more "supernatural" than high fantasy. It deals with ordinary high school students and ghosts and half-ghosts. (The half-ghosts are only half-dead. It's a long story.) I'm actually afraid I'm moving things too fast--looking over the fantasy novel I wrote in my first year, nothing started until I was at least 14k in.

Actually, maybe moving faster is better.

And like other people said, just start the romance early! Or maybe even visit unrelated peoples in your fantasy world who are madly in love for a chapter. I'd just say don't give up or switch now. However you resolve your problem, I hope it works out for you. =]

The last two years I wrote some stuff that was quite clearly fantasy. I honestly don't know what to call what I'm writing right now, because it's extremely disjointed. If I bring it all together, I think it will be some variation of magical realism. If I give up and write one of my other ideas, it will be more of a reimagining of a classic fantasy tale.

Secretly I wish I could write Chick Lit. I saw some books in Jo-Beth that were truly, truly awful in their cheesy chick-litiness, but they were published, and that's more than I can say for my books!

I'm writing some fantasy erotica over here on the Northside. Wish we had some meets over in our neck of the woods. Amani's would be perfect for it!

I'm doing fantasy, of the steampunk-with-a-mystical-and-magical-edge to it variety.

It's slowly coming to the point where I decide to just make up how something works in my world and I get 500-600 words on that. It's a sniplet of the novel I'm sure I can add somewhere later...

This exactly!! I have a lot of great scattered ideas, but filling in the spaces between... I just don't feel inspired. Back in my Chick Lit days, I could always just throw in a new job or a new apartment to fill some space until finer-tuned editing time. But how on earth can I throw in extra padding in a fantasy world? And why does it seem so hard for my character to be charming and witty while she's exploring, when she can be quite charming and witty when she's interacting with others?

I feel like right now, I'm writing that annoying climbing-the-snowy-mountain-for-twenty-pages scene from LOTR over and over and over.

Guillermo is my hero, and making him proud would be absolutely amazing. Haha.

Hiya, I'm also taking on the feat of writing a Fantasy novel. Honestly, it's tough work, but I'd much rather stay on the fantasy side rather than reality. I know what you mean in the way of filler, haha. I've got about a dozen things I want to happen in my novel, yet they're so spaced out in the time-line that I have almost no idea what to write in between. q: Anyway, I hope your writing goes well for you in the coming weeks. Good luck, yinz. (:

I'm writing my first fantasy also. It's going pretty well for me I guess. I'm doing some romance things also, but it's not until later in the book. I know what I want to happen. I just cant seem to get my characters to that point without it being too cheesy. Right now I'm just pushing through thou and getting stuff down, and I figure I'll get the cheesy crap out later. Good luck with your romance part. If you need any help I'll be glad to brainstorm with you

She clearly has an anxiety disorder brought on by uncertainty. Or she has really uncomfortable footwear.

T - you say you've written short stories in the past. Do you have any advice on those? Because my novel is meandering in that direction and I'm really behind because I'm not so sure how to start.....any help would be vastly appreciated, if you'd care to share a tidbit or something.
