It's a big base and yes, I'm being presumptious in thinking we might have a presence there. I hope that there our Ft. Hood NanoWrimos will use their writing for dealing with this situation. Isn't this the best refuge after all? My sympathies to all. And no, I'm not turning this into a political post of pro-anti war, pro-anti military. The setting is military, but the break down has happened all over the country in different times in different settings.

Writing can be good therapy. That's all I'm saying.

Peace, Namaste.

This from the Fort Hood official website:

Fort Hood will observe a day of mourning on Friday 6 Nov 09. The duty day will begin no earlier than 0900 -- Fort Hood services will continue as previously scheduled but with a modified heightened security on post. Schools will remain open. -- Family Hotline: 866-836-2751or 288-7570

The Killeen NaNo region is a small region that includes Fort Hood. There are at least three Wrimos located in Fort Hood, but since none have word counts posted, it's not clear if they are writing this year or were just affiliated in prior years.

Killeen's regional forum is here: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/2016848

Thanks Mr. Happy. I'm actually very political but did not want to bring that here. However, in the context of writing and what writing can do for our soul, I felt the need to post. Any big shooting spree is traumatic no matter where and no matter with whom. US, or other country. Thx for the support Mr. Happy.

and thanks for checking that Lazym. I have been registered for a few years but then sick kids (november is such a murphy's law time) and school stuff would always prevent me from truly writing. Hey like this year, kinda sorta. I've had a sick kid at home for over a week and now voila, my turn. I write long hand but cannot as easily spend time online to type it in for the word count..I have so much more. It's one of those things, the Killeen nano's could very easily be just writing on their own but not necessarily joined the word count. Nanowrimo is a great challenge but for us with families, it's even more challenging. I will check out the link you provided and wish them our best on behalf of the Austin nanos.

Writing is such a good thing. Even for those who think they are not writers. Think Julia Cameron, think Morning Pages.

have a nice weekend all

Anyone who wants to do some good for our Ft Hood servicemen and women and have some dedicated writing time, try and hit up one of the local Red Cross donation centers to donate blood. Speaking as a medic with some experience in the matter, gunshot wounds like those experienced by the victims of the shooting mean you lose a lot of blood. The Central Texas area (actually, the entire United States) is experiencing a serious shortage of blood, and the hospitals that have wounded soldiers were basically begging additional labs (including down here in the Austin area) for blood, any blood, please provide some blood for these people...

Anyone who donates in Austin will be providing blood to replenish more local stocks, rather than provide blood directly to the soldiers, but it's the thought that counts, and you can have some dedicated sit down get some typing done while you're helping out time!

Thanks for the suggestion AND thanks for the reality check. My dh actually said do you remember when after 9/11 there were blood drives even though nothing of it was going to NYC? I think it would be nice to know what people 'actually' need and being part of the Postcard Fairies...one could always send postcards in condolences and/or encouragement.

good luck on your overachieving goal..got mine only inasfar as hoping to type my words onto a Word doc. That is what is my biggest hurdle. [s] You got yourself a good word count..hope you're part of our word count challenge with the State of Maryland!

I'm actually revoltingly depressed, Dutchie, that this is the first year I'm paying attention to the forums, and I started paying attention on the fourth, barely too late... I'm not part of the challenge, which has me more than a little annoyed, because I'd like my count to help!

I started off as a firefighter eight years ago this year... I remember standing on the side of the road to collect money for FDNY. We collected $35,000 in the space of a weekend, and helped route people to the blood drives if they wanted to continue to help out that way. Anyone who wants to help out, just check out the American Red Cross website, there are plenty of ways to help... If you want to send thanks and prayers and whatnot to officer Munley, the tiny little thing that first shot at Hasan to get him to stop, browse through the Statesman's online archives to get the information on how to do online cards for her...

It's a pity that it takes crises for people to get up and give, but if that's what it takes, then thank goodness for the occasional crisis... Just remember that blood is always needed, care and kindness for our civil servants is ALWAYS appreciated, and even just good thoughts will go a long way!

Good luck getting everything typed up... I hope you start to feel better soon!
