And ultimately, confusion.
I've looked every place I can think of on the site and can find nothing.
How do you earn the merit badges?

When you buy them, they come with a little piece of paper that describes the requirements for each one. So far, I've earned my NaNo Socialization badge by attending a write-in.
I really want to earn my Secret Novelling badge, I just have to figure out how. The downside of having an Alphasmart is that I can't pretend I'm working on my computer at work while I'm writing.

Can you sneak your laptop into work, Jesso? I bring mine to work (I'm a sub teacher) and find a surprising amount of time to secretly novel. And I've been trying to pick up as many computer lab gigs as possible to deflect ;-)

Not really! I work at an office job with an "open layout" (where it's just desks in a room, no cubicles) and my desk is just outside my boss' door, and I sit across from my supervisor. In our room, it's just me, my supervisor, and a lady who's going to eventually take over some of the work of our owner so he can retire.
I figure one day this month, after I've backed the whole thing up to Google Docs, I could sneak some words into there and then sync it back to my Alphasmart when I get home. I'm determined to do at least a few words this way so I can earn my merit badge! It still counts if I only do 20 words this way, right?

Go old school! I totally do that when I'm away from my laptop.
Scribble down the last few lines you have typed up on a sheet of paper before you leave, then when you get a spare moment, write some more. It's a bit time consuming, but this way you look like you're being productive, and you don't get in trouble. Alternatively, take your paper for a 'bathroom break' and sit in a stall and just write hardcore for five minutes. You can definitely get more than 20 words that way and it's very low-suspicion-causing.
Not that I do this on a regular basis, or anything.

Ha ha!
Just last night at the write in, i asked Jesso,
(I'm pretty sure I'm thinking of the right name)
about the merit badges.
I will be buying some from the store very soon.
As well as the travel mug, the cap, a shirt or two....not all at once, but
they are on my list.
Happy days all!

I've love to see a list of merit badges and their requirements. I know I've already fulfilled a few of them.

*clears throat*
NaNoWriMo Merit Badges won't be easy. But with courage and follow-through, anyone can become a decorated NaNoWriMo veteran. The requirements for each badge are listed below. If there are multiple paths to badge-attainment, you only need to complete one of them to earn the badge.
Earn the NaNo Socializing badge by...
-Dragging a family member or friend into NaNoWriMo
-Taking part in a word-war with an online NaNo Buddy
-Attending a NaNo Kick-Off party, write-in, or TGIO party
(I've earned this one for the 1st & 3rd reasons)
Earn the C affine Abuse badge by...
-Consuming dangerous amounts of coffee, tea or caffeinated soda in your quest for 50K
(Totally got this one the day I drank coffee. I am not a coffee drinker)
Earn the Procrastination badge by...
-Skipping writing for more than three days in a row
-Spending over 30 cumulative hours during the month on the NaNoWriMo forums
-Cleaning your home instead of working on your novel
Earn the Word-Count Padding badge by...
-Quoting song lyrics or other books in your novel
-Having a stuttering or triple-named character
-Writing out contractions
-Introducing unneeded dream sequences or hallucinations
(Yeah, I don't use contractions and all of the characters are preceded by a title of some sort....)
Earn The Rally badge by...
-Having a 5,000 word day
-Overcoming a 10,000 word deficit
(I write 5K daily, so I haven't allowed myself to own it yet, but I need to overcome 10K today so we'll see....)
Earn the Secret Noveling badge by...
-Noveling while at work, school, or any other place you're supposed to be doing something besides noveling.
(Yup - I totally own this one....)
Earn the Creative Nonfiction badge by...
-Plundering overheard dialogue and real-life events for novel material
-Placing barely disguised friends and family members into your novel as characters
(I took requests from friends, family and other NaNo people to be characters before NaNo started :P)
Earn the Eureka Moment badge by...
-Experiencing that "aha!" moment when a major plot issue is resolved, and your story comes together.
Earn the Random Ending badge by...
-Writing a gleeflully left field or completely nonsensical ending.
(This is planned!)
Earn the NaNoWriMo Victory badge by...
-Writing a 50,000 word novel from scratch in thirty days. (We salute you.)
....I think I just earned my Procrastination Badge. I had to type all that off this tiny piece of paper.....

We so need a merit badge for this:
Author is distracted and chooses not to write. Then just doesn't want to write. Gets out of a funk. And still goes from 10K to 20K in one day.

I think that would be the Rally badge- you wrote more than 5K in a day, after all! Here, pretend I'm pinning a NaNoWriMo Rally Badge to your shirt/vest/sash :)
