So I just ran out of pocky and need to make a konbini run...and it made me curious. What Japanese snacks are you munching on as you write your nano?

I get through a lot of pocky too, only I tend to go for the Fran pocky, even though it's more expensive. Partly because I love the almond whipps flavour, but mainly my name is Francesca, generally known as Fran. I GET TO EAT POCKY WITH MY NAME ON IT. :D
I also buy Meiji chocolate quite a bit.

Oh, man. In March I discovered that I'm wheat and soy intolerant which makes snacking quite hard in this country! Case in point, I worked out the culprit behind last week's stomach ache's were my favourite brand of rice crackers (taihen!) and yesterday, bought a packet of potato chips and didn't check the ingredients until I sat down to eat them -- again, containing soy! There is even soy in the peanut butter!
Love the fruit in this country though! Figs are so much cheaper here than in NZ, and I live in Mikan central -- can't wait!

I feel your pain on the limited diet thing. My husband and I are a vegan trying to get by. My food kanji comprehension is graduate level (yet I can barely order a pizza). Animal products are hard enough to steer clear of--but avoiding soy in Japan? Ouch.
NaNo snacks recently? The Clif bars my hubby brought back from Canada last week.

It's a bit of a challenge, yes!
Good for you and your husband! I have a lot of respect for vegetarians and vegans, mostly because I know I'd never be able to do it. Having heard horror stories from my vegetarian friends here, I can imagine just how much difficulty following a vegan lifestyle in Japan would be. Are you able to order vegan products online or do you do most of your shopping here in Japan?

You live in Mikan central? I used to live in Ehime-ken, so I certainly know the feeling. Having free mikans all the time was soo amazing.
