Ok, I'm at 10, 673 words and it's been 3 days since I've written anything. For the past 3 days, life had been so hectic that I have been away from the computer during all those times. When I was actually home, the first thoughts that crossed my mind were either food or sleep. Sigh... I hope everyone else is faring well though.
Just felt like mentioning this. LOL!

You're not the only one. I hit 10k on my first day and the next day I just sat around and vegetated. It's fun.

I have to force myself to write everyday. If I don't I have to make up for it regardless. I hear ya when you say you can't think of things, but I guess, I want this to succeed and I will make it work at all cost, even if that means sacrificing food, sleep or sanity, which I have sort of juggled in the first week alone. That being said, I'm at 16k words at this moment. Not bad for someone who has never done creative writing in his life.

anyway, to be on topic, I've been slacking lately... I try to at least write one thousand words each day, but my goal is actually five thousand a day. >.< I'm so lazy.

WHOA THERE.
Keep things in perspective!!! I have 1) NO JOB, 2) NO SCHOOL, 3) NO REAL HOBBIES
Also, this is my 7th year participating, and over the years I've developed the discipline to continue writing even while completely distracted.
Your 20k is really excellent for a first-timer! Keep it up!!

Yargh! for me its not so much stagnation as realizing my novel isn't taking a logical path, and going back to rewrite an entire section which then nullifies near everything that came after it. Had to initiate the rewrite - it wasn't going where I wanted.
so does a rewrite of 8K words count towards the total? :)

Only if you didn't delete it.
For me, logic flies out the window during the month of November. I type out every word that comes to mind, as long as it follows the previous word, and contributes towards the making of a phrase, a sentence, a paragraph, a scene, a chapter ...

Well thankfully after 4 days, I finally caught up with the bare minimum. I actually set a goal for 2000 words a day but threw that out of the window when I realized that I was about 6000 words behind! GEESH! Now after a really sore wrist, I'm back to just doing the minimum 1667 words a day. I just hope I can make it to the end. So far what I've been churning out seems like cheating because what I'm writing about is more like an exaggerated version of a story of my life. LOL!
