if they just got it "used' within the last day or two, it could be mine.

My house was broken into on Friday and my laptop was stolen. Along with my nano novel data, etc etc.

borrowing a laptop from a friend, but I ust don't know if I have the heart to even bother trying to start all over again this year for NaNo.

Ouch. The loss that represents has to be hard.

I really encourage you to keep going on this year's NaNo if for no other reason than to not let them steal that as well. Write in defiance of those creeps. Better yet, put them in the novel and do all kinds of nasty things to them. Speaking as one who has had her purse stolen not once but twice in the space of a year, you can't let them take your heart too.

Good Luck.

I'm sorry!
If I were you, these area the steps I'd take bases on what my dad refused to do.

1) Put keyed locks on all your windows, and steel doors and door frames on your doors.
2) Adding decorative metal bars to windows does help, but can be a fire hazard too so iffy.
3) Put in a security watch sign and a beware of dog sign. Usually they are looking for an easy target, and the non-pros will skip any house with a security watch sign near the house or a beware of dog sign. My uncle found this dog that would bark when strangers got too close. It was a mechanical thing. He finally got grandma a real dog, but that dog is not much of a watch dog. He barks at everything, but wants to play with everyone.

4) Change your Novel story and have the MC bring the criminals to as vile of a justice as would make you very happy. It helps me to deal with pain. I had everything I own that had any value stolen several times when I was a kid. We finally moved out and sold the house. The even stole my piggy bank, that looked like it belonged to a young kid. They don't care. Our old house got broken into 14 times in 7 -8 years. And, I'm NOT exaggerating. Of course, we lived in North Mpls, 1280 Queen ave North. I am sure that the new owners fixed that house up to make it more secure years ago. My dad insisted that we didn't need steel doors and frames. There's nothing left to take so they won't be back. They were back -4 times. To wreck the place as we didn't have anything to take, and they didn't want the furniture.

When I move into my new townhome, the first thing I'm going to do is figure out how to secure a French patio door. They are the easiest things to break into. I'll probably ask the police if I can get a Police Watch sticker or some sort., as I can't afford the security company and haven't seen a sign laying around anywheres.
