So what are you listening to this very moment? A song on your ipod? Children racing around the house? Parents asking if you have your schoolwork done yet? Or something else intierly.
For me, I have "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot (the only song of his that I actually like).

Last year, I discovered that Vangelis (The guy who did the Blade Runner soundtrack and that Chariots of Fire song that's in every parody of people running on beaches, ever) is amazing for word count. Vangelis in the background from about the second week onward last year caused my characters to come alive, and Vangelis even decided to create my plot twist for me. Don't ask me how, but I don't think that gigantic forest that my heroes had to go through in the middle of the book would have come about if it weren't for Vangelis.
I put his name into Myspace Music, click on 'play' on the first album, and away I go, streaming every album one after the other and watching my word count soar. ^__^
For me, I can't listen to music that I know the words of or musicals or anything with really identifiable lyrics, because it distracts me trying to listen to the words too much.
As of now, I'm listening to the hum of the pepsi machine in the Meyer Health and Sciences building at NIC-- Free WiFi!!!

OK Go's Invincible. ^^ OK Go is my favorite band on the face of the earth.
When I'm writing I need either loud music where you don't really have to pay attention to the words, or absolute silence. Having, like, the TV or something on in the background gives me a headache and gets way too distracting.

I went to a concert at Calypsos last night, my friend was playing, and his band played a cover of "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd that blew my mind
So naturally, when I went home, I put that side of The Wall on and played it about 18 times, so Comfortably Numb is stuck in my head. :)

Let's see... I've been listening to a combination of classical music,--particularly enjoying Swan from the Carnival of Animals--Adam Lambert, Hayley Westenra, and random Japanese/Chinese/videogame/anime songs.
...Yeeeeah. Hm.
