the Journey
We'll discuss this more at our TGIO and at the kick-off meeting January 23rd, but I wanted to make sure everyone knows about the Journey. Formerly called the Pledge, this writing group is intended to keep a core group of writers happy and writing throughout the rest of the year. Each year, the new/renewed membership of the group decides on the focus and events for the group.

In the past this writing group has included:

  • full book critiques (but note that we've trended away from that in recent years, due to the time commitment this entails and the wide variety of genres the group can represent; Katherine has had good luck getting full book critiques from critiquecircle.com)
  • short story projects, including the 2009 Infinite Monkeys Short Story Anthology that was a lot of fun to do.
  • social events (writers can't live by writing exercises and critiques alone)
  • writing sessions (Wednesday is a bad night for me, but I've been impressed by the reports of the Caribou Coffee write-ins this year)
  • writing exercises
  • regular jabber meetings

We might be looking into:

  • writing retreats
  • road trips to writing conferences

I encourage you to express your interest, ideas, questions and other comments about the Journey in this thread.

I'm interested in joining.

And is there anyone who does the writing conference/classes out in Iowa in the summer?

Is there any sort of email list or e-group for this writing group? I probably wouldn't be able to trek all the way down to N'ville except once in a blue moon, but I'd be interested in keeping in touch somehow.

Ooo I haven't done them, but they sound like something I would love to do. I've never actually gone to a writing conference or a workshop type thing, and I think it would probably be very helpful, and a lot of fun too.

Yes, we have an e-mail list that gets updated every year. We also have regular jabber meetings, so it is possible to participate in the journey from afar.

Count me in again this year.

I crossed the 50K mark at 11:45am today and walked away mid scene. Time for chocolate.

I was undecided about going again, but the fact we somehow got Infinite Monkeys together and that the book is ready changed my mind. Count me in again.

I am so amazed that I actually crossed the 50k mark!

    and
That I am ready to keep right on writing this novel (which has gone and 'trilogized' on me} until it is done, and I can't wait to start the draft of the next in the series.
I know I could not have done it without the amazing Naperville Community. Thanks for all your support. I would very much like to continue to learn from and lean on you all.
I think I'm ready for the Journey.

Alas, I failed miserably. But I want to sincerely congratulate all of you who were steadfast and made the mark.

I'm very interested in a year-round group. Are there any out there in the Downers Grove area who'd be interested in forming up this way? Transportation is generally a problem for me.

I can be reached at

Thanks, and again, Congratulations!

Well I was on all the email lists for The Pledge but sadly never really got involved. *sorry*

I will once again say I would like to be involved with all of you remarkable creative genius people and hopefully this year life won't get in the way *quite* so much.

Cheers!

Ditto. Nice to know I'm not the only one who had real life intrude enough to throw me off track ;)

Hey, I appreciate that everyone is eager to join the Journey, but please don't post your e-mail addresses or other private information here in the forums. There are spam bots that scan forums for e-mail addresses to spam!

In case it is too late for you to edit your comment, I've sent out a request for assistance from the nanowrimo staff to edit it for you.

Like ElbaKerone, I was also on The Pledge e-mail list but did not participate.

I would like to try again this year.

Thanks

Tim, everybody:

Ignore the previous message that Ajey posted regarding joining The Journey. It seems that this same Ajey received an email invitation to join this Journey several days ago and is just now responding to this email.

Ok. I've subscribed everyone who responded to me via NaNoMail or e-mail; and the initial e-mail has been sent out with the instructions information for the website. We'll let things continue there until early January when we plan the alternate kick-off meetings (one or two jabber-based and one more real-life event besides the one on the 23rd).

I'm in. (and probably Barry as well.)
And Sabrina for the social stuff (but not in January--she has scholastic bowl tournaments twice a week for the whole month.)

Just a quick note that we have a social meeting for lunch Saturday, Jan 16, 12:15 pm at the Panera on Ogden (K-mart plaza) in Naperville. Come on by; I just saw tonight that e-mail appears to be bouncing for three of the Journey members :-(

We have twenty three members (there are more than that on the e-mail list but these are the folks who have added themselves to the members list on the wiki). There are three major projects for the Journey:

  • Anthology 1: an anthology of short stories based on a common first line (16 participants)
  • Anthology 2: an anthology of short stories based on a common theme (like Infinite Monkeys). There are 14 partipants.
  • Chapter book: a web-only anthology of first chapters from novels. This one has 10 participants.

I am thrilled to have the Journey be so active, an improvement over last year’s successful Pledge. We are also pursuing a social activities Path, a writer’s conference Path and a Revision Path.

Did you miss out on joining the Journey but are interested? Contact me and I can help you.

And our two Anthology projects are now underway!

  • Anthology 1: all short stories sharing this common first line: The letter was unreadable, save for the last few words.
  • Anthology 2: all short stories sharing this common theme: Dreams
