Gresham/SE Portland

First off, does anyone know of a good coffee shop in SE Portland? The only one I know and frequent is very small with no outlets. Well, no outlets they welcome customers using.

I'm currently writing Tuesday mornings at Cafe Delirium in Gresham. Yes, we have been writing in a coffee shop every week since last year. We moved a couple of blocks north after the loud talkative people stole the outlets at Jazzy Bagels for a month straight.

If anyone wants to come and meet the girls who wrote their first novels in a coffee shop, feel free to say hi on Tuesday!

For this year, I'm game for anything between 75th ave and Sandy(considering I work there). And even then, I'm open to suggestions

First off, what works with schedules, for those interested? I am really open, and my work schedule will change at least twice between now and November 1st.
Introductions!

Hello! How's everyone doing? I' not the ML, but the ML isn't here yet, and the forums happened to open up early (yay!), so I decided to start an introductions thread. So, here, you can just tell us whatever you want, maybe your job / grade level (no specifics are needed, just say "high school/college/Hogwarts"), but most importantly, what your novel will be about. Oh, and also what port of Portland you are from, to help out the ML in choosing meet-up locations, and how many years you've been nanoing, and what years you've won. Lastly, on a scale from 1 to Q, measured in kiloplatypi, how much butt are you gonna kick this year?

I'll start! The name's Zivlok, I've been doing this here literary event since the Fall of '05. I remember it well, you whippersnappers! Back then, to write even a single word we had to walk uphill, both ways, in the snow, WITHOUT FEET. You youngin's today complain if you don't have any shows - HAH! We didn't have any appendages to put shoes on, and we liked it that way! Things were simpler!

Anywho, I haven't won yet, but hopefully the fourth time's a charm? I'm currently enrolled in PCC, Cascade campus, so if there's anyone there, we might want to look at setting up regular writing times in the library or something. I'm from NE, and my primary mode of transportation is the bus while I'm looking for a good bike.

As for my plot, here's the brief synopsis: A Tiawanese chef teams up with a newt in a fez to save his large-bosomed girlfriend from zombies, which are keeping the aforementioned girlfriend in a dam on the Columbia River. However, unbeknownst to everyone involved, a rogue cryptogeologist, a Native American, and Joe Camel are hitching a plot to destroy each and every dam on the Columbia. Also, there's a cowboy with 3 knees riding around on a praying mantis whilst wielding a gun that shoots velociraptors. As in, shoots them out.

I'm trying to keep up my own interest by having three parallel storylines, so I can switch between them if I'm getting bored with a certain one. And lastly, I am going to kick 3 Belgium's worth of kiloplatypi in butt this year!

Hi NaNoFolk,

I just wanted to point out some advantages of this 10th year of NaNoWriMo: not only do we get a whole extra hour on our second day thanks to the stupid clock-changing ritual, but we also get ten (10) full weekend days this November. A person could write 5000 words a day just on saturdays and sundays this month and still be a winner!

If you don't already read the local blog OurPDX, check out this entry all about our favorite novel writing month.

Midnight Write-In

I thought it might be more handy to have a thread just for this topic. So far, people have liked the idea of Pharmacy Cafe but one person noted it might be a bar now which wouldn't work for the under-21 crowd or for people like me who don't drink. We do need to check this out though.

Coffee Time is a nice place. I have loved writing there. However, I am a bus person and my bus doesn't run around 2 am when they close so I would rather find a place that's open 24 hours.

Fireside Lodge is still open 24 hours. They do want us there - at least the owner does. He thanked me last year for bringing in so many people. I'm sure he would welcome us again and I will call him if need be to let him know we will be there. I haven't been there for probably 10 months and don't know what the current employees are like. I had my concerns the last time I was there. Fact is though, if they are open 24 hours, then they can't tell us not to be there, especially if the owner wants us there (and our money, of course).

Are there any other coffee shops open 24 hours? Washington County is too far away from me but any place within view of the MAX would work. I just don't want to have to take three buses to get there.

So, what are the thoughts about this topic? BTW, Halloween plays well there. People show up after they're done with handing out candies (or collecting them) and have brought left over candy to share! And some people even came in costume! I'm sure we will have just as much fun this year as years past.

Possible Portland/SW Washington Partnership

Hello Portland! We thought we'd send a friendly "howdy" over the bridge to you and let you in on our biddings.

This year will be a pivotal year for the Clark County area. We have a strong backing of volunteers as well as our first ever treasurer. Our hope is to invite Portland to our Kick-Off party, though it will be on the other side of the river we hope this could be a great chance to warm up to each other, and show you how Vancouver parties! In all honesty, how much trouble could Novel Writer's get into? Our idea of fun and other peoples ideas of fun are a little different, don't you think? Who knows, we may let our hair down, take off our librarian glasses, and let the fun fly! -Or not. :)

This post is simply to wave hello, and let your ML's know where to go if you all decide you want to team up. Also, wouldn't it be fun to have a word war? First region with x amount of people with 50k wins?

Take care and don't forget about us!

To lose someone you love is to alter your life for ever. You don't get over it because 'it' is the person you loved. The pain stops, there are new people, but the gap never closes. How could it? The particularness of someone who mattered enough to grieve

Portland Area Groups: Northwest (Pearl and Nob Hill)

Hello! Last year I was sad to not get to spend very much time with any of the local writers. I locked myself in my apartment or the local coffee shop and slogged through alone. This year, I'd love to meet some people in my local area of town for a weekly writing meetup or just to put on my friend's list and IM when I'm heading to the coffee shop/pub.

I live in the Nob Hill around near 21st and Johnson. There's a little coffee shop there called Coffee Time that has wifi and a lot of outlets and is open until 2:00 A.M. Could be an idea for late night writings, evening meetups, or even a kick-off Midnight location (even if we will only get 2 hours in before closing, that's two hours in your own neighborhood).

Anyone else nearby?
Portland Area Groups: North (Interstate, etc)

Seeing the other thread for NW made me think of one for my area. I live just off of Interstate, along the yellow line. I've only lived here for about a month or so, so I'm not quite sure if there's any good meet up spots or what have you, but if anyone in the area (or from another quadrant) has an idea, feel free to shout it out!

This is my first NaNo in Portland, so I want to meet as many other writers as I can. I used to live in Kelso, Washington, and only had 3 other people! How sad. I love being around people, and the competition makes it all that much better.
