Hi all,

I'm heading to Sertino's on Tanque Verde for some writing time tomorrow (Tuesday) and was thinking, why not make it a write-in? Anyone else interested in an east side write-in tomorrow from 6-9pm at Sertino's?
Introductions anyone? :D

Hey everyone. Since I doubt anyone knows me, my name is Paul. I'm a 16 year old junior at Catalina Foothills High School and I did manage to complete NaNoWriMo last year with my novel Split Soul. Unfortunately, I never edited it, and I never got the paperback copy from CreateSpace either because I couldn't figure out how to get the page formatting fixed before the deadline.

Anyways. I made a promise last year to get to know my fellow NaNo writers better, and this thread should help new comers get to know others as well. So maybe say your name, age, whether or not you've done NaNo before and if you've completed it, and your hopes for the upcoming NaNoWriMo

Dear fellow NaNoWriMo participants:

This is my first time participating.in this amazing challenge. I've worked like around the clock like a maniac since 7 a.m. on Nov. 1 and am proud to say I just finished my novel at approximately 5:30 this morning (Nov. 9).

No matter what, I'm thrilled to say I'm a WINNER!

I'm pantsing and panicking! Going to forge through, though. I'm not sure I like my MC. Never had that happen before. Guess she'll evolve the way she wants to. lol

About 1,700 words, so it's really too early to tell, right? I'm chugging out about 500 words/hour. Have to finish by Nov. 20, because family is coming for Thanksgiving.

This is an unexpected adventure.
Tucson Weekly doing a story on NaNoWriMo!!!

A writer from the Tucson Weekly will be doing a short piece about National Novel Writing Month for the Book Feature section of the November 19th issue!!!

She *might* show at the Black Rose tonight but it's not very certain. I guess I'm her go-between.

She says, "It won't be a terribly long article---775 words for the books section---so I'll probably only need to talk to one or two other people besides you. Maybe you can help me pick the most interesting people."

SO! Do you consider yourself "interesting"??? OF COURSE YOU DO! You're doing NaNoWriMo, aren't you? There you go!

Anyway, if you are dying to talk to the writer, (keeping in mind that your half-hour interview with her will get reduced to one phrase from one of your sentences, in all likelihood), let me know. Thanks.

My name is Margrit.
Write-In at the U of A on Friday the 13th!

For anyone interested (namely, students who don't have cars and can't get to the official write-ins), my best friend Krissy and I are organizing a get together for all Nano-ers on the UA campus. (Or people who just live close by)

It's going to be on Friday, November 13th, from 7-10pm (though it might cut short or go later depending on who shows) at the Honors Lounge in the student union. For those of you who don't know where that is, it's on the second floor across from the Cactus Grill. Here's a map:

http://www.union.arizona.edu/infodesk/maps/SUMCMapHandout.pdf

Make sure you go to the smaller HONORS lounge, not the bigger regular lounge just next door. :P

If you can make it, please RSVP and let me know so Krissy and I have a basic idea of who to expect. Thanks, and we hope to see you there!

(btw, the study rooms are open to everyone, not just students)
OpenOffice vs MS Word

I've been using OpenOffice to work on this year's MS. I've noticed a weird discrepancy between my word count in OpenOffice, Word 2007 and NaNo's Official Tally thingy (tm). OpenOffice is often way off, sometimes by as many as 1000 words. I'm wondering two things:

1. Has anyone else noticed this problem?
2. What causes this?

Midway Party?

So, I was just thinking that November 15th is the halfway point and people would probably want a break after 14 days of frenzied writing. How interested would people be to have a midway party to kind of forget about noveling for a few hours, watch the hallowed Stranger Than Fiction, eat some snacks, talk about how the noveling has been going. It would most likely be in the afternoon. I could see if work would be willing to donate space again.

Let me know what you think. :D

Happy noveling.

Hi everyone! I'm a traveling WriMo heading south for the winter! I live here in Boise, Idaho, and will be in Tucson for the submission week of the NaNoWriMo. I will be computer-less, am finishing my novel by hand, and will be submitting using the Lorem Ipsum generator. I am looking for a fellow WriMo who would love to have coffee and allow me to submit using their computer! Please let me know if this is something you would be willing to do!!! Thank you very VERY much!! ~Ruthilyn
Sorry I'll miss all you guys!

Well dang!

I get to see none of you all! Started out November with the family coming down with the flu (yeah, no one wanted to see me then, obviously), and now tomorrow I'm heading off to California for the rest of the month, so I don't even get to come once to say hello. Crud! I wish you all good luck, and hope that you can make it this year, though! And congrats to those who already have!

Take care,
Write-Ins at the U of A?

Okay, so if any of you are students without cars like me (and my bff Krissy), you'll have already experienced the utter disappointment that was missing the kick-off parties. Yes?

So, would any students on campus be willing and interested to do a write-in sometime later this week or something? I'd love to meet everyone, and that way we don't have to feel left out for all the write-ins happening off campus.

Tucson Writers--looking for a critique group for that nano?

Hi there!

I'm a member of a small critique group here in Tucson that is in need of a few more members. We top out at eight, we currently have four (or five, when our hiatus person comes back).

We all write fiction, although the type of fiction varies from person to person. We meet every two weeks, and are required to submit a piece for crit every other meeting. Pieces are generally four to five thousand words long. As a member you would be required to both submit and provide critique for each submission in a timely matter. We do meet in person to discuss critiques.

I found the group myself through nano a couple years ago, and I can't say enough about how much my writing has benefited from good solid critique.

If you're interested, you can drop me a note here and I will pass it on to the group. We will request a sample of your writing, mostly to make sure you're a good fit for us.

Over 18 only, please, as we do have writers who submit erotica. Also, be aware that we have writers that submit erotica :)

Hope to talk with you soon (other members, anything else to add?)!

Random thought

I woke up to write with a random thought that I don't know if or how to fit into my story. So I am going to post it just to get it out of my head. Also, it gives me a place to find it easily if I do decide to use it.

Collective human knowlege is something we all share. It is neither good or bad, but if it is true it is, it is in all of humanity. The value of good and bad is assessed by the experience of peoples in cultures and while the truth itself remains constant. the value may change.
ML appreciation day \o/

As it is ML appreciation day, I thought it would be nice for us all to write little thank yous in the forums. I hope that everyone can stop by to share a little thanks to our wonderful ML's.

Personally, I want to send a great thank you to all the Tucson MLs of this year and last. You are the people that make this locally possible, and we appreciate every bit of your hard work. You inspire us all, or at least me, to someday strive to help right along with you.
Of course, you guys also have the canny ability of making madness look like the best thing in the world. So here's a giant thank you to all of you <3

now to a more recent note, thank you ThorinLight for organizing all the get togethers and write offs >u<~
You made both the party, and the midnight dash quite memorable. I wish you luck in your adventures in NaNoLand ~

thank you, and sincerely
So, whatcha writing this year?

Inquiring minds want to know... what story are you writing this year? Do you have your plot figured out?

Or are you still trying to decide?

I'm working on my family fantasy story idea that I had tried before. Going to try and not bog myself down this time with worries and second-guessing. Just write.

Parents, where are you writing?

I was wondering how other parents where finding time to write.

Down here in Sierra Vista, I try and get my thinking and research done in bits and pieces during the day and then soon as DH gets home between 5-6 we take the kids to a local park depending on how much light we have left. Only one park is lit at night that we have found. Weekends, we try and find new parks. Last Sunday we found Jacobs Park in Tucson and the kids had a blast.

Why the parks every day in November? Because I have found I do not write like I should at home. Everything gets in the way. Having dedicated time to write, where I can watch my children and husband playing really helps. That way as long as I am not blocked I can get my daily writing done in about an hour.

So parents, what is working for you so far? Tips? Great places to take the kids so you can write?

Writing Materials

How do you guys write? Desk top? Laptop? Voice recognition? Standard keyboard? Ergonomic? Pen/cil and paper? (And does anybody else's laptop or anything have a name?

I prefer to use my desk top, with its ergonomic keyboard but have been known (when camping, for instance) to write long hand (with a pen). This is bothersome because it can be windy outside, lonely inside, and then I have to retype it all anyway.

Now I've got a used AlphaSmart 2000, for which I believe I'm about to score the PS2 cable for $7 (as distinct from the $70 that AlphaSmart would charge me, + s&h). Once I know I can transfer what I write to my computer, I can take my AS2K to the woods and open myself to inspiration.

Conditionally, therefore, yay! If the PS2 cable at SWS Electronics out on Speedway isn't what I need, I still have time to order the expensive cable and get it before our next scheduled camping trip, but I'm really hoping the $7 one works. Either way, it'll cost considerably less than a new Neo, and be just as serviceable.

(My desktop is "the computer" or "my real computer," or "the stupid computer." My laptop's name is Lucy, and I've named my AS2000 Luddie, short for Ludd/ite.)
Tucson writing venues

My favorite writing location, a deserted little coffee house on Campbell (Cafe Diva) went under this year; I guess it was a little too deserted. I tend to write really well, or at least really fast, when I'm in public places. I've got a couple of picnic tables at parks that I frequent, but other than that, I'm drawing a blank on places that'll let me get a beverage and take advantage of their table space for hours.

So... where do you like to write? Any good recommendations?
