Well... theanab asked where the smacktalk thread was. I'm not sure why someone on the SLC team would want to know that... but hey, he asked, so here it is. :)

Hmm. Let's look at those numbers for just a moment...

As of this moment, Elsewhere is /ahead/ of the 50k pace as a team. And they have 8 members on pace to break 80k words.

SLC, on the other hand... is behind the 50k pace, and only has 4 members on pace to break 80k words.

Guess who's winning.... :)

Brandon Sanderson Writing Workshop @ Dragon's Keep

Sorry for the late notice, and the early sketchy details on this. I was notified last week, in passing, that Brandon would be at Dragon's Keep tonight, 'probably at 6'.

Well, it's official now. He will be there from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM, and he will be giving us a little talk about writing. Not sure what exactly, but I'm sure it will be excellent. For those who don't know, Brandon Sanderson is a published author with several excellent fantasy novels out, and he was tapped for the honor of completing the Wheel of Time series.

Please, try to be there early if you can. I know this is earlier than we usually meet, but this was scheduled with minimal input from me, and I'm not going to complain, because Brandon is going out of his way to do something nice for us, as is Dragon's Keep by providing us with this opportunity.

Again, that is tonight, Tuesday the 18th at 6:00 PM, at Dragon's Keep (260 N University Ave, Provo). I hope to see you there!

I realize the place for us elsewheres is just five minutes by car from where I live. But on foot, which is all I've got, it's a thirty minute walk.

So I'm wondering if anybody wants to meet up at BYU to write for a while. It could be anywhere on campus, but I imagine the library might be the preferred place.

First: I'm VERY sorry this is so late getting posted. I've been going crazy dealing with life. Anyone who's ever started a corporation can tell you what I'm going through. :)

Here are the rules for this year. The community has spoken, and it the vast majority of you want the rules nice and simple, so we're going back to first year rules on this:

1. Teams must be completed by Noon on the 8th of November, local time. No changes will be permitted after that.
2. Signups / Retractions must be posted in this thread.
3. That's it.

There are two teams, unless I hear otherwise, since it seems like the various 'elsewhere' regions are all too small to form their own teams. SLC and Elsewhere.

help with word count?

I'm trying to upload my manuscript to count how many words I have so far, but... well... I guess I don't really know how. I learned how to "scramble" my manuscript (changing all the letters to a's?) and I saved it as a separate file. Then I thought I was supposed to paste it (where you edit the info about your novel) in the box below where it says how many words you have. But... the box is grey and won't let me click in it? Is there something else I need to do or that I'm doing wrong? I appreciate it! Thanks :-)

Awww, crap. So, here's my thing:

This year, all year, I've been developing ideas for a dramedy YA novel in which a girl inherits a fairy godmother position from the aunt she always thought was just a bit nuts, not semi-mythical. The Guild offers to pay her whole college tuition, room and board and give her a stipend basically on the condition that she train as a FG in the style of National Guard (one weekend a month and two weeks every summer). Well, she is a starving student and figures there are worse things she can do than let someone give her a full-ride scholarship on slightly kooky grounds. She then finds out that her client is actually her freshman college roommate.

So, I've been working on characters and plotline and all that stuff. Then in the middle of the summer, my good friend AnakinsFavorite started talking to me about an idea she had for a novel dealing with the Shoah/Holocaust. I was intrigued and then surprised later on that summer when she asked me to co-author the novel with her.

The last couple of months have basically consisted of me reading about concentration camps, tracking down deportations, reading up on Nuremberg Laws, developing the characters of a Jewish stonemason and a German SS officer... You get the idea. I've read a 900-page comprehensive history of the Holocaust, am plowing through other history texts and memoirs. I'm even learning German.

So, that's taken up all of my mental energy for original fiction and then my CR for Fanforce said that we could have a Nanowrimo kickoff party after the Halloween party. All of a sudden, my first plot bunny kicked me in the shins and yelled "WRITE ME!" I then went "Well, this is like having one last fling before you get married." Writing the book that I'm researching for is a huge commitment of time, energy and especially my emotions, so tonight, I decided to participate in Nanowrimo this year.

Can I get my straightjacket now?

I posted this in the Plot Realism forum, but I know not everyone makes it over there, so I'm hoping maybe I'll get a better response here.

Is there some place where a lot of high school students go? Does it vary based on the high school? Do any of the high schools have really huge rivalries? How about the active hiker types? Do they have a place that's really popular? How about a place that's a little more out of the way or sort of the "insiders" spot?

Basically, I want the sort of info that only locals know. The stuff they don't stick on the tourism and school district pages.

Utah Wordwar - 2008 Edition (Rules Discussion)

Welcome to another year of NaNoWriMo! To continue the tradition of past years, I am starting up this thread to establish the rules for this year's war.

Last year, we experimented with locking people out if they failed to update for a certain interval. In my opinion, that didn't work very well, and caused bad feelings on both sides.

This year, I propose we go back to the very simple rules we had for the 2006 war. You have to sign up to participate by the end of the first week, and once that period has passed, the participant list is locked.

Also, I would like to include all the Utah regions this year, if they are interested. It should make for a more interesting competition.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Feel free to post anything concerning the rules for this year's wordwar here.

Provo Kickoff Party & Day 1 Write In!

I somehow missed getting this information posted over here sooner, but better late than never.

Kickoff Party

The Provo Kickoff Party will be at Dragon's Keep in Provo, starting around 7 PM on Friday (Halloween). As usual, I will be ordering pizza if there are several people interested. Bring $5 if you want to chip in. The party will go until everyone is gone, or the Keep closes. I may have to leave early, depending on when my ride needs to leave, but you're all welcome to stay. The Keep has a halloween party going on that evening as well, so we won't be the only rowdy group. :)

Day 1 Write In

I've been debating what to do about the Day 1 Write In, and since it's probably going to be a smaller group, and I am without transportation for the weekend, I've decided to hold it at my house. It will be Saturday, starting at 5 PM. Again, pizza (or chinese!) can be ordered if people are willing to chip in, or there's several fast food places in town.

Please RSVP if you plan to come to the Write In, so I have an idea how many people are coming. Parking might get a little tight, so if some of you want to carpool, that would be great.
