[STICKY] NaNoWriMo '08

Hello Northern Virginia Wrimos!

This is just a little (or maybe not so little) post to introduce myself, the new NoVa ML, and say welcome to all the new and returning folks that make this such a great region to be in. Unfortunately, our Municipal Liaison from last year will not be joining us in the moderation front this time round, and that, coupled with all the new features of the site may make for a bumpy first while, but I'll do my best to help make this a fantastic November.

Just a couple notes:

-As I'm sure you're all aware, Northern Virginia is a huge region, with lots of traffic and tons of people with wacky schedules and differing forms of transportation. Obviously, I can't be everywhere at once, and due to the new site I'm not even sure if we have another ML (if someone has signed up to co-ml, send me a nanomail so we can conspire!). I hope this goes without saying, but just in case, feel free to set up any and all write ins you please.

I probably won't be able to make all, or even most, of them, simply due to the size of Northern Virginia. But I can put all the events up on the snazzy Google Calendar, so nanomail me your information and I'll get it up ASAP.

-Once again, big region, so I imagine there will be multiple Kick Off and TGIO parties. If for some reason you can't make the ones that have been posted, host your own! For those of you who are new to the NaNoWriMo game, write-ins, Kick Offs and TGIOs can be set up just about anywhere: from the comfort of your home, to the restaurant down the street.

If you'd like to set one up at an actual sit down restaurant, I'd suggest calling ahead with how many people you think may be attending. If it's some place like Panera or Starbucks, most of the time it's easiest to just wander in and set up shop near a power outlet, as they don't seem to mind people camping out so much.

-Anything hosted by myself will be all ages. If you're not sure and under age, don't be afraid to send a note to who ever is hosting the event to see, but don't be afraid to come out of the woodwork, either. Obviously, if someone is hosting a Kick Off at the local bar, you might want to check in first. But I've come to find over the past years that most wrimos are pretty darn friendly.

-I don't know what else to say other than feel free to contact me for any reason- questions, comments, things that need to be added, whatever!

Ballston Common Mall - Food Court Write-Ins - Each and every Saturday in November

Details:

Time:

7:30 - 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM

Location:

On the Bloom's Grille side of the Down Escalator across from Bloom's Grille
(the Mc Donald's side of the court next to Subway)

November Dates:

Saturdays -- Day 01 -- Day 08 -- Day 15 -- Day 22 -- Day 29

It costs $1.00 to park in the Parking Garage all day. The Parking Garage elevators go all the way down to the Food Court without any stairs blocking the way.

Y'all can get there from Ballston Metro. Go south on either Stafford Street or Stuart Street two blocks to the Mall.

For those slightly more directionally challenged, Ballston Metro is on the Orange Line. When one comes up the escalator at Ballston Metro, they are on the south side of Fairfax Drive. Turn down a side street, but don't cross any streets. Go two blocks down the side street and it will lead you directly to the Mall.

Fairfax City pre-NaNo planning party - Oct 31st

For those of us with kids in Fairfax County schools, I'm guessing it's going to be tough to get together with others to kick off NaNo -- the 1st is a Saturday, and there are two teacher workdays on Monday and Tuesday.

So how about a pre-NaNo meet on Friday the 31st? Upstairs at Starbucks on the corner of Main Street and Old Lee Hwy (across from the new library), 9:30ish to noonish. We can do some outlining and get excited to start writing. :)

Then we can start our regular morning meet-ups on Wednesday the 5th.

Dulles area website

Hello! I've been working on a website for the Dulles area crowd. Several of us met through last year's Nano, and have been getting together ever since. Some of us even attempted Script Frenzy, and now we're also commandeering a small writing group. To help keep track of things I put together a website for us - NanoStew.net.

The site has information about the group, resources for writing, a blog for us to post updates and excerpts of our writing, and a nice long list of nano dares. We hope to update and expand the site as we go, and hopefully get some new people to join us as well.

While the site is centered around the Dulles/Sterling area, anyone can visit and check out what the site has to offer. Being listed on the site is reserved for local and fairly active participants. I believe it would be too hard to keep up with everyone, and the blog also has a maximum number of users. That being said, we would love to have new people join us. Once Nanowrimo is over we plan on keeping the Dulles Creative Writing Group going, and would love to have some more members (Our two meets so far have consisted of three people). So please check us out.

If you have any ideas or suggestions, let me know!

What's Everyone Writing?

Because I'm curious and like to know about my fellow wrimos crazy novels, and to try and get some real conversation started in here, here's a thread to post about what you're writing. I know I'm not the only one who's been planning since the first, and thinking about it since way before then.

I'm writing my usual young adult pirate story that goes with the series that I've been writing the past three NaNos, none of which will probably ever see a proper ending XD

So, what's everyone else planning on writing this November?

Who's in Loudoun?!?

Anyone in Loudoun County? I'm dying for some good write-ins somewhere a little closer to home. I don't see so well in the dark, so driving home after a long writing session can be a little perilous, especially with all the deer that tend to come out around NaNo-Season.

I'd love to get some write-ins going in Leesburg or maybe even Ashburn. Anyone game?

Anybody else feeling it yet? Last year was so horrid for me (between moving here from minnesota, getting sick half way through the month, and having a new baby, i didnt make 30k) that I'm finding it hard to get the gears up this year.
Hopefully I'll make a few write ins this year:) The only one I made it to last year, no one else was there, and I ended up in the hospital the next day.
Blah. Anyway, hope everyone else is getting psyched for another year!

Brunswick, MD - Beans in the Belfry

Hey all you NoVA NaNoers!

I just thought I'd pass this info along... Beans in the Belfry in Brunswick, MD has agreed to host a special kick-off write-in on November 1.

This is an excellent little cafe / coffee shop for anyone who's in Western Loudoun County and feeling a little isolated from the rest of the NoVA crowd.

We haven't worked out all the details yet, but we'd love to see everyone who's interested!

Please PM me if you plan on coming!!! I'll post more details about the event when we work them out.
