Hey, everyone! Look, look, a brand new NaNo year is beginning. Isn't it wonderful? *happy sigh* So come on people, get posting!

I'm Heather and this is my 6th attempt at NaNoWriMo. Wow! It feels like only yesterday I found out about it. I only have two wins under my belt, but I'm determined to change that.

We're holding our own but I hope there are not too many like me who burst out the first week and then had so many distractions that nothing was happening in the few spare minutes leftover. I am writing again since my work projects and other obligations have eased a bit. I hope anyone else in my situation is breaking through too. Darn it, I wanted to spread this out better; seems I'm going to have to pull a few blitzes to cover the ground I need to before kids descend upon the home and Thanksgiving totally distracts me. Oh well, we haven't been able to get it together at the B&N Lynchburgers but I can say that I got a lot done on those nights. Maybe I just need to pack up again and see if the B&N mojo works again. Wherever your writing let's bring this baby home Virginia.

I'm about to head out for the day, but if you're on the Hampton Roads north side (or fancy a pretty change of scenery!), come find me at Aromas in Williamsburg (Prince George St) around 2pm today! I'll be wearing green (as usual, haha) and have put lots of nice stickers on my laptop that say I <3 NaNoWriMo and other such things so I'll be easier to spot. ^_^

I'm so excited to be at Hollins this year where I know there are several people waiting for November as anxiously as I am. =D We need to have meet-ups this year - perhaps at the Rat? - at least once a week I think, because I don't know about all of you, but meet-ups help my word count in an awesome way. But first I think you all should introduce yourselves! Also, facebook me. XD

I'm Emily, I'm a first-year, and I write primarily fantasy with historical undertones. Or possibly overtones. This is my fifth NaNo attempt and hopefully success. =D

Charlottesville HALFWAY POTLUCK on November 15th

On Saturday November 15 it will be HALFWAY! To keep everybody going, we're having a potluck dinner in the WriterHouse kitchen at 6pm, then writing until 9pm for whomever wants to stay. So please, bring a casserole or "covered dish" (if you're from the midwest) or a dessert or a salad or side dish to share. We have coffee and tea.

There's a possibility that a local TV news reporter will stop by to interview participants, so the more, the merrier!

another goal reached

Hope others had their own successes tonight. Made it to my 25,000 goal for the week with 30 seconds to spare in uploading the count. It took me some time to type in what I had written yesterday and today but I did it. Anyway, you can do it - set some goals and go for it. I'm going to take a rest today and may set a goal of another 25,000 by a week from today, Sunday. Then I think I'll set smaller goals going back and editing and ammending without losing word count but adding in where needed. This draft is for a story that may become a series or trilogy or something if anything ever comes of it so 50,000 is really just a beginning. I'm glad for the opportunity to purge and spill out the "rot" so I can come back and strip the impurities from the sludge and refine the leftovers. This really has been fun so far. Hope the rest of you are enjoying the challenge as well.

Lynchburg and Elsewhere

Well, I've finally passed 16,000 mark and am challenging myself and others to make 25,000 or more by Saturday midnight.
We can do this. I have to admit I've slowed up a bit because for some reason this oldie finds it easier to let the story flow through the pen before transcribing to Word for a count. I do have a voice translator but it's too imperfect for me on this big a project. I hope some fellow Lynchburgers will get together to meet this challenge Saturday evening at the B&N on Wards Rd. It would be nice to encourage each other and have a moment or two to breath while chunking away our stories.

Hi Folks,

I thought I'd start a topic just for us. I never thought I'd say Henry is centrally located for anything, but it is kind of in the center of the above-named towns. Anyone want to get together for a write-in, or just to discuss writing? I've seen folks post from Martinsville, Danville, and Floyd. We live in Henry, but my office is in RM. There are several locations... all with drawbacks -Edible Vibe in RM, Blackwater (I think that is the name) in Floyd, Binding Time in Martinsville, Danville...??, and Henry... well... I guess there is the Community Center.

NaNoWriMo-inspired programs at the Roanoke Public Libraries

Hi All! As you might have seen in earlier posts I do work at the City of Roanoke Libraries. We are doing a series of "write-ins" for all writers (not just NaNoWriMo-nians) at a few of our different libraries. Participants get food, good company from other writers, some free writing tools (on a free flash drive to boot!) and the chance to have your book printed and placed in the library for others to check out! I'm including the press releases below; feel free to send me a message here and give the Reference Desk a call at 540-853-2477. I'm there most of the time (If you couldn't guess, my real name is Nathan).

I hope to see NaNoWriMo-nians (my new favorite word) at these events!

Hello, again.

Wow, I think even more is going on at the libraries in Roanoke than even usual!

Check out this huge activity - it's a challenge for us all...

November is National Novel Writing Month and we want to throw out the challenge to you to take part! The challenge is to write a novel during November, yes, a whole novel! NanoWriMo.org is the website that explains all about it but put simply the novel needs to be 50,000 words long, about 1,500 words a day on the subject of your choice.

Roanoke Libraries will be hosting writing meetings throughout the month to assist and encourage you. They will be great opportunities to meet other folks who have taken up the challenge and also provide assistance on such things as the technical aspects of using a computer to write the novel, unless you want to be old school and use pen and paper!

I have already taken the challenge of running the Richmond half marathon in November, with just 2 weeks to prepare and am thinking of taking up this challenge too, along perhaps with Nathan Flinchum, computer whizz employee at Roanoke Libraries.

Call Nathan at 853-2477 for more info.

Oh, as an extra incentive we are working on some terrific awards for those taking part, including having the novels printed up into actual books (professionally done, not photocopies, ha!) and having them available for loan from all Roanoke Libraries. Also, we may host some author readings from the resulting books.

So, go ahead and take the challenge. I just hope my novel, if I do it, isn't too scandalous!
