[STICKY] Calling all Wrimotaurs!

Please tell us who you are, how long you've been participating in NaNoWriMo, what you're writing this year, and whereabouts you live in the city. Also any other random facts you'd like to share. :)

I'm Janna, one of your co-MLs. That is, I coordinate and run events, moderate this forum, send out peppy e-mails, make weird videos, etc. Together with Heather (who will introduce herself later, I'm sure), I do my best to make October and November memorable for you - in a good way! :)

I've been participating in NaNoWriMo since 2001 or so and have been co-ML for Calgary since 2005. So far, I've only won once, in 2006. That is attributable to both the chat room and Tim. ;)

This year, I've decided to write a sequel to my winning novel from 2006. It's a YA novel about an autistic girl who has to testify in the trial of a man who sexually abused her. Fun! (Or something...)

I live in Bowness (NW for those who don't know the city very well) but travel all over the city for meets, so unless I'm stuck doing something I really can't get out of, I'll be at as many write-ins and other events as possible - even the ones Heather and I don't plan!

I own two guinea pigs, one of whom seems to be very pregnant. Anyone want a baby guinea pig? It'll come with a cage and stuff!

I work in the disabilities field, for the Alberta Council of Disability Services. We certify agencies that provide services to adults with disabilities in Alberta. It's all about the quality of life!

[STICKY] Upcoming Official Events - Please Read!

Okay, we have a calendar of events, but I know some people don't remember to look there. So I'm going to list our events here. If you have questions, feel free to ask!

Online Events
Location: http://alberta.chatnano.net/Calgary/index.html

We chat all year 'round on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting at 7.00 p.m. During October and November, people are always in and out, so feel free to stop in any time!
Our Starting Gun will be on Friday, October 31, starting at 9.00 p.m. It will continue until sometime on Saturday, November 1. We begin with chatting and goofiness, and at midnight we start the word wars!
Our Race to the Finish Line will be on Sunday, November 30, starting at 9.00 p.m. It will continue until shortly after midnight. We do word wars all evening and finish up at around 11.30 p.m. so everyone gets validated on time.

In-Person Meets

Tuesday, October 14, 6.30 p.m. Denny's on the corner of McKnight & Edmonton Trail
Bring your current project, paper, pen/pencil, and maybe a friend or two! We'll have writing prompts available for those of you who don't write except during November.
Saturday, October 18, 1.00 p.m. The London Fog Cafe, in the plaza on the corner of Heritage and McLeod

Sunday, October 19, 2.00 p.m. Southcentre Mall food court
That's right, people, we have lucked out and the administration at Southcentre has said we are allowed to hold a write-in at their food court! This is a pre-NaNo write-in, with the goal of finding more participants. We'll have word wars, so bring your current project, or we'll give you a writing prompt, and have paper and writing implements along. We'll have colourful signs on the tables we occupy, to attract attention, and if someone comes over and asks us what we're doing, we'll have flyers to give them as well. The big rule is that we aren't allowed to approach people ourselves - they have to come check us out (i.e., no soliciting allowed).

Our Midway Bash is always a lot of fun! We'll be doing a craft (I am stellar at this; just ask the people who made ninja plot bunny finger puppets last year) and mostly just hanging out, but if people are interested in writing as well, we can have some word wars.
Friday, December 5, 6.30 p.m. location undecided
The TGIO (Thank Goodness it's Over) party is always a good time, as well. It's a time to celebrate our accomplishments and receive awards! I'm hoping to find a good location for this one this year, so stay tuned!

I'll be sending out weekly e-mails from now until NaNo is over, giving you more details on events that are coming up that week.

I noticed that we have a few participants who are attending the U of C this year. I am wondering if it would be worth it to you guys for us to have a write-in or two on campus? Obviously you can meet up on campus anyhow, but I'd be willing to run an "official write-in" at least once during November. I'm an alumni, as is my boyfriend (who has yet to post to the introductions thread), and my brother works at the library, so I'm sure it would be simple for us to book a space.

So, this is the thread for all you students (regardless of school) to post about your schedules etc. Set up your own meets on-campus! Make new friends! Trust me, it'll be worth it. :)

Pre Nano-Meet Thread

I would DIE to have a pre-NaNo meet up.

My availability is during evenings for Tuesday-Saturday as I work 8:30-5:00 on weekdays and 8-5:30 on Saturdays. Sundays and Mondays I have off. (GOOD NEWS is that I don't work weekends starting next month, thank Christ)

So. Who's up. I know some people are itching to do this! :)

Strategies for Traveling and Doing Nano

Well, this is my third attempt at nano - my first was mired in traveling from New Zealand to Australia to Canada (and I still managed to write 20000 words); my second try was last year, but I don't think I even got to 5000 (a bit of transition at work made things a bit more complicated)... and then this year I'm COMMITTED to finish, but there was this amazing deal for flights to New York ($375 return!) so I had to take advantage of it. So, my first week (Nov 1 - 8) will be in NYC. I've gotten in touch with a few folks from New York who are in Nano, but does anyone have any other suggestions/ strategies for writing when traveling?

I makeded a plot sheep!

Apparently there's talk of a plot farm being made.
I don't know the details. I just know that when I came home today Nikki had bought clay and was trying to make a horse.
So, I grabbed some clay and made a sheep.
Now I'm under direct orders to post pictures of the sheep.

Dark pictures so you can see the detail on the body, bright pictures so you can see the detail on the face.

Upon a closer inspection, I need to do something about his head...
