Excerpt: All But Innocent

This was the best part of the ride; I had a good view of St. Joseph Sound to my left. The breeze from the Gulf was gentle, and the ocean was already taking on the glassine quality it would have during sunset. In the distance was the long white line of Caladesi Island. Cars were parked alongside the road and the benches were full of visitors admiring the scenery.
I continued on, past the break of Hurricane Pass. All too soon, I passed the figure of the Scotsman who welcomed drivers to Dunedin. A tourist was having herself photographed at the sign. I chugged on to Palm Boulevard and turned there, heading towards my house. I would love to have a condo by the ocean, but the cost – not to mention the insurance – would be outrageous. Besides, where would I have put my father?
