He held the berries to my lips and I couldn't help but to hesitate at that last moment.
Taking a step backwards, I held up my hand. In front of my eyes, I could see that my fingers were shaking ever so slightly and I knew that he could see it too.
"Sera, you know that this is the best way I can help you."
"No. This is the only way we can help each other," I countered. "You wouldn't be doing this just for me."
His head bowed down as he nodded. "There are other things that you can try."
"Things that won't have the same chance that this will."
I stepped forward and took his hand, his palm opening on top of mine, the berries still there. His skin was stained and my fingers traced the lines of the juice.
"There isn't much time. The moon won't wait," he whispered to me. His fist closed. "You need to choose."
The berries went back to my lips and I opened my mouth.
This was the decision. One way or another, things were never going to be the same.
