Excerpt: The Kin: Betrayal
When I woke up, I was laying in a hospital bed, my wrists bandaged. I stared at them, trying to remember why they’d be bandaged, and nothing came to mind. I racked my brain, but the only memories I could conjure up were that of the ambulance ride from… from I had no idea where. Some place, obviously, which had knives in it, or sharp glass. It didn’t make any sense to me.
A doctor walked into the room, carrying a clipboard and a frown. “I see you’ve finally awoken.” He said, tapping the clipboard against his smooth chin. “Sleeping pills and razor blades… how badly did you want to die?”
I shrugged. “I honestly have no memory of doing something like that.” I bit my lip. “I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t do something like that.”
He hung the clipboard on the foot of my bed, smoothed his lab coat down and said, “Well, you did. Whether you remember it or not is negligible. You’ll be watched for twenty-four hours and then we’ll let you go.” He turned to leave.
“Ok… but can you answer just one question for me?” He sighed deeply, and without turning assented. “What’s my name?”
