Hot wind gusted up from the great, sand city to the flat rooftops of the tall building and swept his hair back from his face. Galantray. A city that once in its brilliance burned with the light of the stars, now burned with the heat of the flickering fire. From the heights he saw his Empire pass from being, and felt the inevitability creep into his bones.
"I was never meant to life beyond this point. Imagine that. Me, a martyr."
"I think it seems poetic in a way, seeing how many of them you made," crept in a voice coming up from behind him.
They stood for a moment in the flickering light, watching the flames sweep destruction across the city in its own hypnotic way.
"Why don't you run?" the voice asked, his voice nearly breaking into sob.
"This is what must happen. Why do you not run?"
"I need to do this. It's my choice to come here. You're here because this is where you think you ought to be."
"What is happening has already been decided, if I had not heard the foretelling I would not be here, but I did and I am."
"You shouldn't let your beliefs cage you're decisions. Don't find out its impossible until you've done it. One of the first lessons you ever taught me."
He turned to face his protégé.
"And apparently the last," he said drawing his blade.
"I’m sorry grandpapi," whispered the youth unsheathing his malkis and taking his stance.
"Stars forgive us," he murmured under his breath.
And they began to dance.

"Theo," croaked the old man, hardly hearable to a human's ear.
"Yes father?"
"Bring Lann to me, and I shall do the acceptance now."
"Father?" asked Theo mystified.
"I’m sure you know a way into the house undetected, hmm..."
Theo blushed slightly at this accusation but nodded anyway.
"Go quickly then. Do not tell her anything yet. Go!"
Theo scrambled to his feet and ran silently out the room with a quickness and stealth that was unreal.
The old man stood with speed and awoke his young servant Dain, and told him to prepare for immediate and final leaving. The teenager scurried off to do his duties and the old man then tottered off to write something or other.
"Father," came a voice with a knock on the door. He looked up and saw his brown haired, yellow eyed son with his mate-to-be Lann, a small black haired, green eyed girl with a sly smile.
But her smile is nowhere to be seen now.
"What is happening? Why am I here in such late an hour?"
"I’m doing your acceptance now."
"Now? Sir, is there something wrong? Are you alright?"
"We are leaving in the morning. We won't be coming back for quite some while."
Lann frowned at this but eventually her face cleared.
"As long as I am with Theo I don't care."
The wrinkled old man smiled and his eyes twinkled with a secret that only he knew.
"Yes," he murmured. "Yes I do believe that's true."
The ceremony of acceptance which absorbed Lann into the family was finally finished before dawn, and the guardianship of her was passed from the patriarch of the Marnish family to the patriarch of the Wild Pack.
The old man, then quickly whisked Lann away with the rest of the family, before much argument could be brought up about kidnapping and such nonsense, and two weeks later she declared herself with child. The pregnancy was greeted with much joy and celebration.
And all the while in the corner, an old man sat with his eyes twinkling with a secret only he knew.
And only he would ever know, if everything went according to plan.

And the wolf child will herald the destruction of the Overlord and rule in the shadows, and dreams will be made of gold
