Excerpt:

“It was a dark and stormy night,” Jay quoted grimly, as she shook the rain from her dark hair. “A dark and stormy Halloween night. That’s how I’ll start my memoirs, when we’re famous.”
I smiled nervously. “Are you sure this is a good idea? I mean, wouldn’t you rather just get drunk like everyone else?”
She smirked at me. “You’re kidding, right? You don’t even like alcohol.”
I shrugged. “I don’t mind it.”
“You’re scared, aren’t you?”
“No!” I said, too quickly.
“Yeah, you are.” Her smile widened. “You honestly believe this’ll work?”
I shrugged. “Of course not.” I was eighteen years old, after all. Far too old to believe in any of the crap Jay and I had spent the past week researching. But even so…
“Don’t worry, it’s just a laugh. Nothing’s going to happen.”
“Then why are we doing it?” I asked, not really expecting an answer.
Jay grinned at me. “Why not? Anyway, it’s more fun than the stupid party Clarissa will be holding.” The bitterness with which she infused the name made it clear that she wasn’t as indifferent as she was obviously trying to sound. “So, if you’re not going to chicken out, shall we get started?”
I nodded mutely and led her down to the basement, where the three pentacles were drawn in white chalk.
