Excerpt: City Girl, Country Boy
In a storm of feathers I quickly captured the bird, forcing my chapped and scratched hands around the beast. I had had enough if this bird in my barnyard. A few hours earlier I had made the tough choice to cull the rooster, that is, kill it for it's meat and broth. Carefully, trying to keep the sharp beak away from my already bruised skin I headed for the stump.
A year earlier, I would have never imagined that I would be making a life or death decision for a birth ket alone myself. Sometimes I wish I could go back to that virgin state of knowing that my meat came from the meat department and my fruits and vegetables came from the produce section. It was a state of ignorant bliss.
