"East might be better. There's...more of it," she said. "Once we get to Washington, we run out of -- well, we run into Canada."

"We could keep going until we hit Alaska," he joked. "You're packing for it."

"No, thank you," she said. "I just came from Buffalo, and that's cold enough for one lifetime."

"How about if we head north, and then we take a right? We can drive east, across Idaho and Montana and all of those states, just keep going until we drive into the Great Lakes. Figuratively, not literally. I don't want to do some weird Thelma and Louise thing with you."

"I think that was a cliff, not a lake. And your car's all wrong." She put two pairs of jeans in the suitcase for him, not checking to see if they were dirty or clean. "So, is this it?"

"Is what it?" he asked, noticing the way her fingers nervously played with the zipper on the suitcase.

"Do we just keep driving around forever?"
