Return to Hell High
an excerpt
Everybody has nightmares about going back to high school. They usually feature having to take some obscure class you've never heard of and somehow missed the first time around.
Keegan stood in front of the venerable old brick building, anxious to get this over and done so nothing could go wrong. Things frequently went wrong at Alpine Ridge High School. Most of it involved serious blows to her social life.
She sighed and pushed open the door of her Jeep. It was just too cold to screw around any longer. She pulled her wool pea coat close around her throat. She'd forgotten to pick up a scarf before heading up the mountain. Winter clung late to the high elevations, and Alpine, Colorado touched the sky.
She jogged through the front door of the building and took a few moments to thaw under the blowers installed for just that purpose. A quick right turn and ten short steps put her inside the school office.
None of the faces looked familiar. She paused awkwardly and raised a hand. "Hi. I need to pick up the ticket and directions for the reunion this weekend?" She ventured uncertainly.
The tiny blond woman behind the massive front desk scowled. "Cutting it a little close, aren't you?" she snapped.
Keegan bowed her head. "I know, but I've been out of the country. I couldn't get in until today."
The secretary waved her hand dismissively. "Maiden name?" She demanded.
She bristled at the assumption. "Only name, Keegan Clayne."
The blond curmudgeon glared up at Keegan as she pulled a packet from her desk drawer. "ANOTHER one? What is with you young women these days? Too good to get married or take your man's name?" She fished through the folder during her rant, pulled out a sheet of paper clipped to two cardboard tickets.
"I just haven't found the man patient enough to put up with my girlfriends," Keegan reassured the secretary as she snatched the papers from her hands. "Thanks!"
