And Then She Fell Down the Stairs
an excerpt
He then turned and started down the dull, black stairs to the main floor of the school. He was jostled around, the stairs were small and a large number of kids had to walk down them at one time. People were being shoved every which way, and if you didn’t have proper balance or a firm grip on the railing, you would go tumbling down the stairs to a great injury and great embarrassment. When he reached the speckled green linoleum, linoleum landing he looked up, only to be blinded by the reflection of the sun on the rest of the linoleum floor. He closed his eyes and dumbly took a few steps forward, and tried to open his eyes again. Through the glare he could she the silhouette of a girl. He took another few steps forward and was able to make her out. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.
He didn’t recognize her so she must have been new to the area, and she looked around cautiously. Her light auburn ponytail was carefully turned up at the ends and bounced playfully over her shoulders as she looked from side to side. She was absolutely beautiful, with just a dusting of freckles on her nose. She stepped forward cautiously and saw Alec staring at her, she smiled at him and he was about to say something when he was pushed to the ground by a senior.
“Get out of the way!” the senior yelled at him. Alec pulled himself up, but by the time he looked around for the girl again, she was gone. He hurried on to class, arriving just a few seconds before the bell.
