The Life Saver
an excerpt
That can’t be my mother. That isn’t my mother. Lying on the floor. Screaming. Clutching her chest. She’s wearing the same jeans that my mom has. They are splotched with purple, blue, and pink paint from that day we painted all the walls in the house with polka dots, ponies, and hearts. It’s just a coincidence that the lady I’m staring at has those jeans. That can’t be my mom. Lying on the floor. Screaming. Dying.
Then it hits me. That is my mom. My mom is dead. The realization is cold and painful, like an ice cube being thrown at my heart and numbing my insides.
