Synopsis: Cri Du Coeur
Kinda like a mix between The Lightning Thief, the Anita Blake vampire series by Laurell K. Hamilton, and Criminal Minds...
Chris Night, a young Profiler for the Paris Prefecture of Police, is working on her first case – the murder of a man known to the public as a rich and famous businessman: Allard. In reality, he is a member of the Board of Directors for the Supernatural Alliance, and immortal (or was). With the help of her sister, Kya Night, and her mentor, Captain Pierre Marshall, and other members of a new task force created to hunt down serial killers, they investigate the murder. Only Chris, Kya, and Marshall are aware of otherworldly nature of the murders, and must keep it a secret from the public as more killings occur, apparently at random.
The team becomes convinced a serial killer is at work – perhaps of supernatural origins – and the pressure grows as the public awareness of the case increases. Chris and Kya, as new immortals, also begin to develop abilities, including one that appears to cure vampirism, something not seen since the years the Black Plague first appeared in Europe. This catches the attention of the leaders of the vampire clans, including Rianne Florismart, leader of the European Sectors.
The case quickly blows up when the lead detective is murdered right in front of the Paris Prefecture of Police. Chris and Kya manage to cover up the distinctly supernatural evidence, but the new team is faltering and starting to crack and fail before it ever really gets started. The team must hold together in order to solve the murders, even as they are thrust more into the spotlight with interviews and other media coverage.
What happens next, however, threatens to split apart the sisters forever. Their parents are attacked and kidnapped, and Chris and Kya are soon offered a choice by the perpetrator, Rianne: They can give up one of themselves for both their parents.
Chris accepts the offer, and Rianne turns Chris into a vampire so she can use her blood to make a serum that allows vampires to walk in the sun.
Then the reporter who first interviewed the team is killed outside of BFM TV, and the team finds evidence that while there are similarities to the earlier murders, this one is different. Also, Kya fails to cover up the supernatural evidence and it gets leaked to the public by the reporter who discovered the body, Conner.
Most of the public isn’t convinced by the evidence, but some are, and tensions are rising between some team members, and others are pulling closer together, as Kya struggles to keep the supernatural a secret from the others. Conner starts to become convinced that something more is behind the killings, and begins his own investigation, trying to find out what happened to Chris, questioning Kya and the others, getting drawn into the supernatural world as he and Kya try to find Chris.
Chris, dealing with her transformation in the only way and any way she can, continues to investigate the case on her own…
Excerpt: Cri Du Coeur
Rianne walked down the middle of the muddy road, buildings burning all around, the stench of death and charred flesh everywhere. Flames and smoke gouged the night sky, carrying the smell of the black plague to her...
