Synopsis: The Arbiter

In the world known as Aldenard, spirits were thought to reside in the core of the earth; they could manifest in the form of tangible energy used to power the magic many humans used in every day life. Those known simply as arbiters were revered for their ability to communicate with the spirits, keeping in good favor with the benign ghosts and destroying the malevolent demons before they could take away their prized magic. Centuries later, however, these myths were disregarded in favor of more scientific theories.

Escona is a powerful, military-based nation slowly slipping into economic ruin. While many choose between working difficult jobs or joining the armed forces, the people fortunate enough to be born with the gift of magic are accepted into the Magic or Medicinal Divisions of the military and make decent pay. Magic of any kind is a rare talent; those who use it are held in the highest regard for their power.

Elliot Parker is working in a factory to help put bread on his family’s table when he meets a young runaway of the Magic Division. Although he’s reluctant to help the boy, Elliot accepts when he’s offered a sizable sum of gold in exchange for helping the deserter.

Unfortunately for them, nothing ever goes as planned.
