Forbidden Lies
an excerpt
Moira froze for a second. I knew she was looking into my future. “Oh no Laila,” she said icily. “You can’t.”
“I have to!” I said angrily turning around to glare at Moira. Her jaw was set, and her face hard. “He will kill himself if he doesn’t see me or know that I’m alive!”
“But your not!” Moira cried. “You’re dead, he watched your burial. You are immortal now Laila. Just think what it’d would do to him if he saw you dead, and then you pop into his room cold, and dead. What will he think? Think of what it will do to him Laila! Think of him!”
“I am! That’s why I have to go see him he will KILL himself if he doesn’t see me. Look into his future Moira!”
Moira and I gazed furiously at each other for a few minutes. Then the door burst open, and Kaden walked in, his eyes confused, and curious. He looked at me, and I turned away.
Kaden turned to Moira, but I answered him before he could even ask Moira. “I’m fine Kaden. Just drained. Really there’s no need for you to stay around me. I’m fine!” I looked at Moira as I said this.
“Oh, and I will know what you tell him too. So whatever you say, I will know,” I said, and turned on my Ugg and stomped gracefully, out of the room. Isis, was outside the door. I jumped and glared at the little girl. “Gawd, Isis, just scare me to death! Oh wait!” I laughed sarcastically. “I am dead. How could I have forgotten!”
Isis just stared at me, her dark eyes sad. Her stare was really creeping me out. “What?” I asked. I crossed my arms, and stuck my hip out.
“I could’ve changed your future,” the little blond girl whispered.
My mouth opened slightly, and I heard Kyria outside with Heath taking a walk through the moonlit forest. I looked at Isis in confusion. “What?”
Isis motioned for me to follow her. I watched as she bounced down the hallway, her blond pigtails flopping. I only hesitated a second before I glided after my youngest sister.
I found Isis in her pale pink bedroom. She was sitting on her long window seat hugging a lacy white pillow to her chest staring down at the courtyard. I slowly lowered myself onto the pink cushioned seat, and stared at the young girl.
Isis turned her large dark eyes to mine. Her pouty lips were parted a little as she looked at my face. “If I would have choosen to, I could have saved you.”
I stared at little Isis. She couldn’t be serious. Could she? “What do you mean?” I shifted my seat pulling my legs up to my chin.
Isis bit her lip and sighed. “Laila, I’m nearly a century old. So I have had plenty of time to get control of my power.”
“So,” I asked running my fingers through my long glossy side pony. “I’m still lost with how you could have saved me.”
Isis looked down at her pillow. “I have total control over my power Laila. Total control.” Isis took a deep breath and closed her eyes. “I was sad, and jealous. I was always the only one here that was taken before I was meant to be created. Then you came along,” Isis gave a small smile. I blinked realizing her voice sounded very mature for a ten year old.
Isis began again, “I saw your future as clear as Moira did, but I had an extra step. I could change your future. I could’ve prevented Berns from going after you that night. I probably could’ve even prevented the Destructor’s from wanting you so badly. But Asher an Nestor have made it clear that I can not change the future unless necessary.
“At first I felt pity towards you. Jayla was constantly in a bad mood, and she was always watching never much fun. Then I thought that there could be someone else that could feel my pain, from being separated from my family when they didn’t want to be.” Isis drifted off. I gulped feeling a rise of emotion bubbling up in my throat. Isis was sad, and empty as usual. She was just a little girl who had been stripped of her mortality just like I had. Before I had even had a chance of dying.
“It’s ok Isis,” I said resting my hand on her thin, hard shoulder. “I don’t blame you,” I said softly.
Isis looked up at me with her big eyes. “Really?” she asked.
“Really,” I smiled. Isis smiled too, obviously relieved. I felt my head drift away with Kaden’s worried voice. He was angry with himself and was with Heath, staring up at the ceiling at me. I felt bad, and sighed.
Isis looked at me. “What’s wrong?” she asked tilting her head to the side.
I gave a tired smile. “It’s complicated.”
“I think I can take it,” Isis said facing me and putting her hand in her lap.
I laughed softly. “Well, first off, my head is killing me all the time, so I’m always irritated. Then there’s Kaden, who I do like, and I know likes me.”
“He does,” Isis spoke up. “He really loves you. I’ve never seen him act to any of my other sisters or other vampires I know this way. I can see it in his eyes. It’s different this time,” she said quietly. “He always looks softly at you and watches your every move.”
“Like now,” I muttered, and smiled when Isis giggled.
“Exactly!” I sighed. “But,” I hesitated but changed my sentence at the last second. “I just am not ready for a serious relationship you know, I’m still getting over my last one.”
Isis smiled and leaned closer to me. “I could change that for you,” she whispered.
