The air was split by a piercing shriek. I jolted awake and leapt from bed. It was either very late or very early; it was still pitch dark. Someone down the hall was still screaming, shrieking herself hoarse.
“Rosamund—what in God’s good name is going on?” Lucy wailed, running madly about the cramped room looking for her robe.
“They just started screaming!” I fumbled with the lamp and the matchbook.
“MURDER!” someone shrieked, louder than the others. “MURDER! SOMEONE GET THE POLICE! MURDER!”
